Still No. 1 In My Book: Jets Punter Sells Jersey Number To Michael Vick For $10K, Gives Money To Charity
New York Jets’ punter Ryan Quigley made a quick 10 grand when he sold his No. 1 jersey to Michael Vick … not a bad day for a guy who makes $495,000 for the entire season. But then he had an epiphany.
“Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money, especially for a guy like me early in my career. For a second, I thought that, but then I thought that I can do some good with it. You can give back in so many ways and money is one way,” Quigley said.
Yep. Quigley rolled that money over into a Good Karma 401K: he turned around and gave it all to charity.
When Vick arrived in Jets’ camp, he of course had his sights set on his traditional No. 7 … but Geno Smith has possession of that. And as Smith is likely to be the starter, that number, as Donald Sterling has said about the Clippers, is not for sale. So Vick decided that No. 8 would be cool. But then he changed his mind, and approached Quigley about buying his No. 1.
Quigley agreed, because he thought that he could do some good with the cash. Quigley asked Vick to donate half to Teen Angel of North Myrtle Beach, a homeless teen charity. North Myrtle Beach, S.C., is Quigley’s home town. The other half is to go to the Boys and Girls Club of New York.
“Quigley told WPDE NewsChannel 15 by phone from the team’s mini-camp in New York that there couldn’t be a better charity than Teen Angel in his hometown.
“It was just one of those things that God placed in front of me. It’s just one of those things that clicked, like oh, man, this is my opportunity to give back,” Quigley said.
Renee Hembree started Teen Angel five years ago. The program helps pay for things homeless students need, from prom dresses to hair cuts to tennis shoes.
“When I presented him with the idea of the money not going to myself but giving back to my hometown and half to the New York area, it was an easy decision for me, it really was,” Quigley said.
So shines a good deed in a weary world.
