“That Was The Game”: Wes Welker’s Costly Super Bowl Drop, Mic’d Up

Last night, the NFL Network aired its Sound FX show for Super Bowl 46. And in the following clip, we hear one referee say to another, after Wes Welker’s costly fourth quarter drop, ”That was the game.” And he was probably right.
Sound FX, for the uninitiated, puts microphones on the players, coaches, and refs, and allows the viewer to hear (an edited version of) what was said during the game. These soundbites, interspersed with those super-dramatic slow-motion camera shots, provide a unique look behind the scenes during some of football’s biggest games. Since there is no bigger game than the Super Bowl, last night’s episode was fantastic.
Had Welker made this catch with 4:05 left to play and a two point lead, New England is likely to have won the Super Bowl. The math says so. But the throw from Brady was a little behind him, and the rest, unfortunately for Welker, is history. Video here.
