ESPN Anchor Awkwardly Reads Angry NFL Player’s Tweets On Air

Suzy Kolber is great at what she does for ESPN, but her NFL Live producers put her in an awkward position when they asked her to read aloud Chris Johnson‘s angry tweets on air.

I don’t know if you’ve ever read an athlete’s twitter account, but they tend to be poorly written. In fact, most people’s twitter accounts are poorly written (it’s that damn 140 character limit). But when a football player is furiously typing out angry messages without vowels about how he’s not getting paid, it can get downright ugly.

And so, when Kolber read a quote from the Tennessee Titan’s Twitter account yesterday on NFL Live, she was faced with the nearly insurmountable task of making the tweets sound intelligible:

Watching that video again, I can’t believe how close she came to making this seem like a normal, every show occurrence. But as it drags on, even Suzy can’t cross the chasm of dissonance between an NFL running back’s angry UberTweets and something that sounds like it belongs on television.

I’m sure the emerging trend of quoting Twitter on ESPN says something lofty about how important the site has become as a place to get news. But let’s hope that if this trend continues (and it will) ESPN can find a way to make the translation a little smoother.

I love stories like this, and thank God for YouTube. YouTube is to your typical sports media hack what Kryptonite is to Superman. These media hacks just wish YouTube never came along, because it forever immortalizes every stupid thing they say and do.
