Terrell Owens Might Be A Ram Soon, Ending Collusion Rumblings

Remember that talk about how Terrell Owens couldn’t find an NFL team because the league was banding together to keep him out? Well, if any of that was true, it looks like it was a temporary plan to put a scare into him. According to the latest from ESPN, T.O. might be on his way to St. Louis, ending a protracted free agency and giving the Rams a stopgap in their rebuilding process.

MJD at Yahoo! is intrigued by the Rams’ interest
because of the “rebuilding process” we just mentioned. The Rams are a terrible team with a long way to go before becoming even decent. So, MJD surmises, they must believe that Terrell Owens will be a positive influence on young players and in the team’s locker room.

That sounds strange, but it might be true. Owens is still a big name, but he doesn’t have the game-breaking ability he used to. He’s 36, and though he can still be effective, he’s on the downside of his career. He has to know he can’t get away with the same antics he used to, and mentoring young players and helping the soon-to-be-outrageously-wealthy Sam Bradford break in to the NFL definitely beats being out of the league entirely.

We don’t think there was collusion involved (after all, the Bengals were also interested and apparently are again), but it takes the right situation to bring in a 36-year-old receiver with a history of acting out – and, apparently, a belief that his days of said acting out are over. If the Rams get this deal done and T.O. behaves himself afterward (and since he didn’t make trouble last season either, there’s reason to believe he will), they’re making an excellent investment, and one that, regardless of what happens, is worth the gamble.
