The Disturbing Findings Of The Jovan Belcher And Kasandra Perkins Autopsies
A few days after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed both his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, and himself in December, reports emerged that he had spent the previous night with another woman, and that he’d later shown up at her apartment, intoxicated. According to neighbors of the woman’s, they let Belcher sleep at their apartment until the morning, after police questioned him when they found him sleeping in his car.
Today, those reports that Belcher was intoxicated were confirmed: an autopsy revealed that at the time he shot himself, Belcher’s blood alcohol content was .17 percent, over twice the legal limit of .08 percent. It was, reports added, likely that at the time he shot Perkins and himself, Belcher’s BAC was higher than that – and, one woud assume, even higher when police found him sleeping in his car. This, as it did at the time of the initial report, led some to question why police let him go when they found him. The dash cam video shows Belcher in a parked, but running, car, and the information here suggests this is still potential grounds for a DUI arrest in Missouri.
What’s not up for debate is that Belcher was drunk, and while that’s sad because who knows if Belcher would have flown into a similar rage had he not been, learning he was drunk wasn’t a surprise. And that’s why the other detail, one gleaned from an autopsy of Perkins, is not just sad but horrifying: Perkins was shot nine times.
The autopsy report released Monday says Perkins was shot in the neck, chest, abdomen, hip, back, leg and hand.
This was, obviously, an awful story no matter the details of Perkins’ death. No matter how it happened, it was a violent tragedy. But seeing that list of body parts where she was shot… man. The list seems almost endless, and if anything, we don’t even want to think about it too much because focusing on the gruesome how of the murder feels like it detracts from where the focus should be, which is on the victim. The information is worth reporting, and those who’ve been following this story ought to hear it, but… man. There’s not much more we can add. And at this point, we’re not sure there’s much anyone should add.
