The NFL’s Return To Los Angeles Gets More And More Inevitable

In the last season of HBO’s Entourage, super-agent Ari Gold was involved in the fictitious pitch of an NFL team to Los Angeles. The widespread belief has since become that reality will eventually mirror fiction, and that a new stadium will soon be built in Los Angeles.

The wheels for the NFL’s return to Los Angeles have been in motion for some time, with Casey Wasserman (who had a cameo in Entourage), CEO of Wasserman Media Group, at the center of the speculation. It now appears that Wasserman is likely partnering up with AEG, the Anschutz Entertainment Group, and that the two Los Angeles-based media giants have begun their push.

From Fanhouse comes the logical conclusion that the NFL will eventually make the move to Los Angeles:

“But here’s the unlikely newsflash: the stars appear to be aligning – no, really — for a pro football’s return to Hollywood. A confluence of developments, ranging from aging owners in several NFL markets to real estate developments in L.A., has changed the landscape and reinvigorated discussions about pro football’s future in the country’s No. 2 media market. The biggest momentum boost: a recently-unveiled plan by Anschutz Entertainment Group to erect a privately-financed, $725 million stadium in downtown L.A. next to Staples Center, the wildly successful arena it built and opened a decade ago.

The story goes on to say that AEG and Wasserman are most likely teaming up, and that the San Diego Chargers are a candidate to be relocated. The would-be owners still need to find an approved site to build the stadium on, and have a long way to go in this process, but it certainly appears like it’s only a matter of time (barring a lockout in 2011).

While the NFL struggled in Los Angeles in the past (the Rams, Raiders), that was before the NFL became America’s new pastime. In a city charged by celebrity status and owned by the Los Angeles Lakers, an NFL team is the cherry on top of an already glamorous sundae.

99% of the time I am against LA getting a team but Jacksonville has been an absolute embarrassment fan wise so I dont mind seeing the NFL leave that city

San Diego has, on occasion, failed to sell out in time to avoid a TV blackout. Presumably this would not happen to the team if it was playing in LA. But there are barriers to a Chargers’ move. There are other teams, in smaller media markets, that would be a better choice for relocating to LA.

Also, there have been serious discussions in SD about the building of a new stadium — the last I heard, these talks were still ongoing.
