Titans Letting QB Vince Young Go: Does It Mean Coach Jeff Fisher Is Safe?

The tumultuous relationship between Titans coach Jeff Fisher and QB Vince Young will soon be over:  the team announced last night that Young will not be on the roster next season.

The move is widely believed to signal a victory for Fisher, with team essentially choosing their coach over a former first-round quarterback.  Yet even with Young’s departure, owner Bud Adams would not confirm that Fisher will return to the team next year.

Trouble between Fisher and Young first began in 2008, when a struggling VY was booed by the hometown fans.  Young proceeded to go missing for several hours, prompting Fisher and his family to worry that he might be suicidal.

Then in November of this season, Fisher kept an injured Young on the bench during a loss to the Redskins despite Young’s pleas to play.  After the game, Young tossed parts of his uniform into the stands and stormed out of the locker room, blowing by Fisher in the process.  After the blowup, Adams told the two to get along.  Obviously that did not work out.

Considering his past with Fisher, it was surprising that Young didn’t take the opportunity to blast the team or his coach.  From the Tennessean.com

“Things happen for a reason. I tried my best to win a Super Bowl for them. I tried my hardest, I really did,’’ Young said. “I just wish Coach Fisher would have trusted me a little bit more. That was the only issue there.

“I like Jeff Fisher as a person, as a coach and everything. I just didn’t feel like he trusted me. In the five years I was there … I feel like he was continuing to treat me like I was a young man when I’d really grown up a whole lot. I just didn’t feel like I had the trust and the love that any other quarterback around the league had. I was always looking over my shoulder. I didn’t feel like I was his guy the whole way.’’

Just a wild guess here, VY – Fisher didn’t entirely trust you because your play and behavior were unpredictable.  Fisher was rightfully hesitant to place the team’s (and his) future in the hands of someone with a history of bizarre behavior.

Young leaves Tennessee with a 30-18 record as a starter.
