WATCH: Mark Schlereth Does Indeed Enjoy Saying “National Football League”
People closely involved with the NFL sure seem to love saying the league’s entire name: “National Football League.” “NFL” is perfectly acceptable – more concise and sleek, even – but something about the full name must evoke the pads knocking, the thrill of competition at the highest level, in a way a mere abbreviation can’t.
And so we wind up with a clip like the one below. Mark Schlereth currently analyzes the National Football League for ESPN, but back in the day was a fine player in the National Football League himself. So it makes sense that a guy like him would hold a romanticized view of the league in which he once competed at an elite level.
How romanticized? Earlier today, Bill Simmons tweeted the following:
Discussing Revis: Mark Schlereth just said “National Football League” 6 times in a minute on SportsCenter. That was awesome.
We decided to take a look at the clip ourselves, and keep a tally of “National Football League”s. It turns out the “six in a minute” was a bit generous, but not by much: Schlereth said “National Football League” six times in the first 1:40 of the clip below, or approximately one “National Football League” every 16 seconds.
His pace slowed after that, but he tacked on one more for good measure near the end. All in all, a virtuoso performance of “National Football League”-saying from a guy who,in the end, is probably just nostalgic for his days playing in it. Watch below:
