Adam Henrique Sent The New Jersey Devils To The Stanley Cup Finals With This Overtime Goal

Only one minute and three seconds into overtime, Devils rookie Adam Henrique stuffed home a loose puck in Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist’s crease to send New York packing and New Jersey to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Los Angeles Kings. In classic Devils-Rangers fashion, the game ended in a hectic and mad scramble for the puck, an outcome dependent on physicality and will more than skill.

Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh fell to the ice in front of Lundqvist, causing all hell to break loose in front of the net. After various whacks at the puck by multiple Devils, it somehow squirmed through Lundqvist’s legs and right onto the stick of Henrique, who smashed the game-winner home. Although Brad Richards stood behind the fallen Lundqvist to protect the net, his upright position gave Henrique the upper hand and allowed him to pounce first.

In Both Game 5 and 6, the Rangers’ lackluster starts produced early deficits which they eventually overcame. But getting over the hump and taking the lead was something they just could not do, as the Devils won each game after nearly giving it away.

The Stanley Cup Finals begin Wednesday, May 30th at 8:00pm in what should be another great series and further proof that NHL playoff hockey ranks among the best sports drama around.
