In Case You Got More Than Four Hours Of Sleep, Here’s The Blackhawks 3OT Goal in the Stanley Cup Finals

NHL stanley cup shaw game winnerIn the fifth longest Stanley Cup Finals game of all-time, the Blackhawks sealed a 1-0 series lead with Andrew Shaw’s game-winner. The goal came 12 minutes into the third overtime period at midnight local time.

It was a stroke of luck for the Blackhawks as it came via a shot from Michal Rozsival deflected off of Dave Bolland’s stick into Andrew Shaw’s leg and under Bruin’s goalie Tuukka Rask’s outstretched arm. That’s less of a goal and more of a Rube Goldberg machine.

The goal illistrates the randomness of sports. We can say all we want that the Blackhawks had a ton of “grit” because they flung a piece of rubber at a net for a double deflection goal, but is it true? Championships are rarely built on one team completely dominating another, the sporting gods usually have to smile upon a team once or twice. Last night, the proverbial hockey coin flipped the Blackhawks’ way and we’ll see if that edge is enough to carry them to Lord Stanley’s Cup.

There’s an old Chinese proverb that says: you can lead a hockey player to a microphone, but you can’t teach him to not swear into the microphone.
