In Mike Milbury’s World, Guys Who Get Elbowed In The Head Are Sissytime Crybabies

Let’s ignore the fact that the guy who threw that elbow, Eric Staal, has a brother (Marc) who suffered a concussion on a hit that Eric actually delivered. Marc was hit by Eric in February of 2010, returned to appear in 15 games for the Rangers, then suffered a setback in the offseason and has not played yet this year. Encouraging shots to the head is ludicrous as it is, but Staal should be sensitive to it knowing the issues his brother has had while trying to recover.

In this case, Montreal’s Tomas Plekanec is trying to corral a loose puck at center ice when Eric Staal gives Plekanec an elbow to the helmet, which Plekanec might or might not have embellished a little bit. Staal was given a minor penalty for the infraction, but Milbury’s reaction was one that would probably be described as exasperated. Milbury argues that Gordie Howe would have been proud of Staal and that he’s fine with a player giving another one an elbow to the head. Milbury has long complained about the wussification of the NHL and can’t believe that anyone would call a penalty on the play, let alone consider it dangerous and suspension worthy.

This is worth watching, both for Milbury’s indignance and Keith Jones well reasoned response, including the use of video of prior incidents, to make Milbury look more than a little bit foolish.

Finally – keep in mind that Milbury was a member of the Bruins team involved the infamous fight in the stands with Rangers’ fans at MSG, in which he took the shoe off a taunting man’s foot and whacked him in the head with it.

And Gordie Howe was a jackass but he was celebrated because he was a good ole’ Canadian boy and it was the 50′s. Times change get over it Milbury and trade future HOF players for garbage and ruin another team.

    Don Cherry can retire now.
We have the Millsbury Doughboy to take his place.
    Sheesh.

Milbury was a decent NHL’er, a terrible G.M., and a horrible broadcaster.  When is NBC going to dump him?  If you can stomach listening to him you’ll soon discover he’s NEVER right.  He adds nothing to a telecast.

Okay, I’ve just got to say my piece. Hockey is a wonderful game, and yes, a very physical one. Regardless of team divisions, all the players share a love and a skill for the game. But no matter how badly you want to win, how is it ever okay to intentionally strike another human being in the head? How many players have to be benched for months, years, or even permanently from traumatic brain injuries before idiots like milbury are satisfied? God forbid someone is struck hard enough in the head to make them a vegetable, or even dead before people stop thinking it’s cool to try to take another player out in this manner. I’m not trying to turn hockey into a sissy man’s sport milbury. I cheer when my team throws hard hits, I love a good fight now and then, and the sport needs that physicality. But the human brain is not something anyone should mess with. One too many concussions and that star player will spend the rest of his life drooling onto his shirt and being spoon fed mush. How dare he support, no, encourage such behavior! Maybe someone should let Eric Staal bludgeon him in the head and see if he reacts like a so called ‘crybaby.’
