“This Is My City!” Disturbing Video From Vancouver Riot Shows Man Attacked By Mob
In case you’re just joining us, the city of Vancouver rioted last night after the Canucks dropped Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to the Boston Bruins. Some of what happened last night was funny and entertaining. Some of it was less so.
There were a few memorable images from last night - like one of a couple making out in the midst of the riot, or people choosing to steal Pringles – that have provided a lighter angle to what happened.
But we’ve been reminded, throughout the day, that this was still a riot: the threat of violence was very real last night, and at one point, it boiled over into an incident that looked like it was on the verge of becoming something very, very bad.
This video appears to be taken by someone in the crowd with an iPhone, and shows two men pleading with a violent crowd to stop destroying a storefront. At one point, one of them, a stocky man in a black shirt and baseball cap, shouts “This is my fuckin’ city!”
He’s confronted by rioters with a long pole, and pushes them back into the crowd. This is at the 3:06 mark, and this is also when things get scary: his attempt to fight back lands him in the middle of the angry crowd. The rioters see an opening, and swarm him from all sides. He is punched and kicked by numerous people until he hits the ground. Luckily, they stop before any serious damage is done.
