The New York Mets announced today that Tim Tebow will be assigned to the Columbia Fireflies — the franchise’s lower-single A affiliate in South Carolina. As far as rungs on the pro baseball ladder go this one’s practically touching the ground, but you have to start somewhere.
The team is already advertising Tebow’s arrival.

The Fireflies are the only Minor League team with a Mason jar as a logo, and that’s about all I know of them — except that they have a nice stadium. They’re in the South Atlantic League, Southern Division — as are the Asheville Tourists, who couldn’t help taking a shot at the Fireflies and Tebow mere moments after the assignment was announced.

Oh, burn! Tebow just got smoked by a Single-A team. (Won’t be the first time, I’m sure). The Asheville social media guy is no doubt referring to Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson, who played minor league ball with the Tourists in 2011.

On the other hand …
The Columbia Fireflies now have more Heisman trophy winners than Clemson
