Michigan somehow avoided an upset by 11-seed Tennessee after both teams took turns throwing the game away in the final 30 seconds. Here’s how the play-by-play looked (via ESPN):
The craziest part came after Tennessee’s Jordan McRae scored on a layup off a Michigan turnover, cutting the lead to just one. On the ensuing Michigan inbounds play, Caris LeVert caught the ball but his foot slid out of bounds, giving the ball back to Tennessee with under 10 seconds remaining:
That meant Tennessee had a chance to hold for the final shot and win the game. Instead, Jarnell Stokes threw his shoulder into his defender on the block and drew a charge call:
It was pretty much over after that, although it took several inbound attempts by Michigan before they were able to inbound the ball to Nik Stauskas. Stauskas actually missed the second free throw, but a last-second heave by Tennessee was long.
Whew! A comedy of errors for both sides. Tennessee will be kicking themselves for throwing away a chance for a major upset, but that charge saved many brackets. So there’s that.
