We’re still a couple weeks away from the 2017 NFL Draft, which means there are rumors aplenty circulating! And that’s what we all love! NFL General Managers love to keep everyone guessing – especially other GMs – so there’s a lot of stuff tossed out there as misinformation. Who are we to sort through it?

Well, we’re a sports opinion site, that’s who! And our readers want to hear all the compelling rumors about the 2017 No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick, so we’re going to give it to them! (Jayson Braddock sees the Browns taking Myles Garrett first overall in his latest mock draft (that goes a full seven rounds deep!), but we’re going to have some fun with these other rumors!)

That’s not to say these rumors are or are not going to happen, but really, with the Cleveland Browns picking first for just the fourth time in the franchise’s 65 years of its NFL existence.

Stanford QB Bobby Garrett (1954), Kentucky QB Tim Couch (1999) and Penn State DE Courtney Brown were the lucky(?) recipients of being No. 1 overall draft picks for the Browns, but none of them panned out:

  • Garrett: Turns out, you can’t be a competent NFL quarterback (at least back in the ‘50s) when you stutter. He never played a game for the Browns. Classic Browns.
  • Couch: Famously chosen before Donovan McNabb (2nd), Edgerrin James (4th), Ricky Williams (5th), Torry Holt (6th) and Champ Bailey (7th), Couch did help get the expansion Browns to the NFL Playoffs in 2002, but he played just one more NFL season after that.
  • Brown: He posted 4.5 sacks in his rookie season – but just 14.5 more sacks over the next five years of his career combined, as he just couldn’t stay healthy. He played in fewer than 12 games three times in his five-year Browns career.
