Almost a week away from the NFL Draft we take a look at potential draft picks for the New York Giants. Last season the team made it back to the playoffs only to lose to the Green Bay Packers in the Wildcard round. This off-season the team cut veteran running back Rashad Jennings and wide receiver Victor Cruz. They did sign wide receiver Brandon Marshall, fullback Rhett Ellison, offensive lineman D.J Fluker and quarterback Geno Smith. Also, they were able to re-sign Jason Pierre-Paul, but they did lose defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins. With the 23rd pick in the draft they can look at adding another offensive linemen or a linebacker. So here are some potential draft targets for the New York Giants.
OT Ryan Ramczyk, Wisconsin- A big problem for the Giants the last couple of years was the offensive line. Injuries have plagued the offensive line as the team is constantly rotating the line. They drafted two offensive linemen in the first round the last five years Justin Pugh (2013) and Ereck Flowers (2015). Last year the team had the chance to take Laremy Tunsil in the first round, but decided to take Eli Apple instead.
DT Malik McDowell, Michigan St.- After losing Hankins in free agency the team has a big hole to fill. Adding McDowell to a line that already has Damon Harrison, Jason Pierre-Paul and Olivier Vernon can cause opposing teams some trouble. If Ramczyk is off the board and McDowell is their I wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants took him off the board.
S/LB Jabrill Peppers, Michigan- The local New Jersey product would be a great addition to the Giants defense. Peppers can play multiple positions whether it’s corner, safety, or linebacker. Already stacked at the corner position, Peppers would fit in nicely with Landon Collins. If they do pick Peppers would the Giants have the best secondary in the NFL? Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Janoris Jenkins, Landon Collins and Jabrill Peppers, doesn’t sound bad to me.
TE David Njoku, Miami- Another route the Giants can go is draft another offensive threat. Njoku is one of the best tight ends that’s in this draft. The Hurricanes have been known to produce some great tight ends such as Greg Olsen, Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Jimmy Graham, and Kellen Winslow. So, adding Njoku to an offense that features Odell Beckham, Brandon Marshall, and Sterling Shepard can cause problems for teams in the league.
RB Christian McCaffrey, Stanford- After cutting Rashad Jennings in the beginning of the off-season, the team can look to add a running back. They currently have Paul Perkins, Shane Vereen, and Shaun Draguhn whom they signed this off-season. Vereen hasn’t been a factor yet for the Giants as he missed most of last season with a bicep tear, and Perkins showed some spark late in the season. Drafting McCaffrey can give Eli Manning the pass catching running back that he’s been looking for.
