Simone Biles is world class celebrity athlete with five Olympic gold medals, as well as the front runner to win the current season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ – and she’s not even old enough to legally drink yet.
The 20-year-old gymnast and her thousand-watt smile lit up the Rio de Janeiro games last summer, when she posted a record-breaking performance for the United States women’s team. She is a truly bright star, but she also had an incredibly difficult start in life – something she recently shared with her ‘DWTS’ partner, Sasha Farber, as they prepared for their latest routine.
The recent theme of the show required contestants to re-enact a major moment in their life through dance, and Biles chose to tell the story of how she came to be adopted by her parents – who are her biological grandparents. Anyone who watched the Olympics remembers the frequent shots of Biles’ emotional parents in the crowd of the gymnasium, and her tumultuous early family life was mentioned quite a bit.
However on ‘DWTS’, Biles tells Farber in her own words about her experience being born to a drug and alcohol-addicted mother and entering foster care with her young sister before eventually being rescued and adopted by her biological grandparents. She is visibly affected as she tells her story, and her father also provides poignant commentary on bringing in Simone and her sister who, he says, stole his heart.
