On her first morning in Moscow for the IAAF Track and Field World Championships, Swedish high jumper Emma Green Tregaro opened the curtains in her hotel room and saw a rainbow.
“I thought that was a pretty good sign,” she said. So she decided to express her solidarity with gay and lesbian athletes by painting her fingernails in rainbow colors. “I wouldn’t say it was a protest more of a statement of what I think.”
That prompted the Swedish Track and Field Federation on Saturday to ask her to paint over her nails, as they could be seen as violating Russia’s law against gay “propaganda,” and could be a violation of the competition’s code of conduct.
Swedish sprinter Moa Hjelmer also sported rainbow-colored nails when she ran Thursday in the 200-meter heats at Luzhniki Stadium.

And so it goes: another small protest aimed at Russia’s new anti-gay law.
Then later on Saturday, this:
The flag-waver is Finnish Minister of Culture and Sports Paavo Arhinmäki, waving the rainbow flag while watching Green-Tregaro compete in the women’s high jump final.
Apparently he was not rushed by the special police and sent to prison, even though presumably there were children in the crowd.
Arhinmäki discussed the anti-gay laws with the Russian sports minister as part of a wider discussion about human rights abuses in the Eurasian nation.
As for Green Tregaro, she said that she was surprised by the reaction.
“It was harder to not paint them in the rainbow than it was to choose to paint them,” Green Tregaro said Saturday. “I’m surprised by the big reactions, but I’m happy about the big reaction because it’s mostly been very positive.”
She said the Swedish track and field federation asked her to “please respect the rules” and change the color of her nails.
“So I decided to paint them red instead, for love,” Green Tregaro said.
A petition to relocate the Winter Games to Vancouver has more than 100,000 signatures on Change.org. It’s supported by George Takei and Anne Rice, and when you have Star Trek crew members and vampires on your side, it’s really hard to lose.
