A Colombian Soccer Player Punched United States Forward Abby Wambach In The Face For No Apparent Reason

The United States women’s soccer team defeated Colombia today in its second group stage match by a final score of 3-0. The U.S. dominated from start to finish, possessing the ball with ease and earning multiple scoring chances. The Colombians, to their credit, did play solid defensively. So there’s that.

But they also provided us with one of the dirtiest plays we’ve seen in a while in any sport, when U.S. forward Abby Wambach was making a run to the box through the middle of the field. Colombia’s Lady Andrade caught up, ran in stride and floored Wambach with a right hook to the face. Wambach went down, writhing in pain, her eye visibly swollen. And, of course, the ref wasn’t looking, so no foul was called.

The punch wasn’t hard enough to keep Wambach down for long, as she scored a late goal in the second half that essentially clinched the match and a spot in the quarterfinals for the United States.

If she had punched Mario Batelli in the face he’d still be writhing on the ground.

  • Ccc

She deserved that ish. The U.S. team look like some desperate housewives and tney play the game like it…..dirty

  • Rship19

“…no apparent reason.” Since when does there have to be in soccer a reason, apparent or not, for a punch to the face.

Four NHL teams have offered the young lady a contract

The US team showed class by not retaliating. There are many countries that would love to have this housewives representing them.

Your an Asshole for even saying a dumbass comment like that.  This is the Olympics not some street thug soccer game.  The Columbian team knew they would be beat so they showed they had no class.

Sad to see that in a forum dedicated to sport, commenting on one of the world’s biggest sporting events in which more than 200 countries participate, so much ignorance, hatred and racism abounds. Regardless of what may have happened during the match, there is no reason for such a ridiculous and shameful display of bigotry.
The Olympics are  highly competitive, and it is not surprising that elite athletes take things passionately, which often can lead to frustration and fighting unfortunately. It happens in sport all the time! That passion and grief over loss or passion for winning is something people who are not at that competitive level could ever possibly comprehend. It could happen to anyone.
The ironic part is that someone punching another person in the face resulted in a social conversation condemning it, but the conversation itself ended up far worse in offensiveness!
If you’re going to use the words “crack whore”,  implications of sexual orientation because these women play football, implications of drug trafficking because it is Colombia and just about more than a dozen more offensive statements in a public forum, then frankly I’ve no doubt in my mind that you could easily be the person giving that punch in the first place.
    Talk about double standards!

  • Ccc

Well said educated….but i still feel it was a deserved punch..based on what I saw watching the entire game online which most of these kids didnt….furthermore im AMERICAN…. chiciti (chicago)raised…and they way these comments digressed from attacking me to an entire country based on some shit people saw on tv speaks volumes to whats really goin on.

  • Really

Ccc, you have elevated douchebaggery to an entirely new level.  Please never have kids.  They would deserve better than what you can offer which is NOTHING.

  • Pisces

A punch is never deserved during a match, ever. This is a competition, not a school yard brawl. I did watch the match, from start to finish. And not once did I see anything that warranted a punch to the face (much less a sucker punch from behind). That was the ultimate display of cowardice-Andrade knew she could attack from behind and Wombach wouldn’t have a chance to defend herself. Allowing Andrade could continue to run off like a classic bully. When an athlete resorts to this, they know they have been beat by a better team and their frustration gets the better of them. Very childish, no matter what countries these teams represent.

Keep defending the sore loser. She was mad because USA is #1.

  • U.S.A.

She didn’t deserve it…playing the game like that is part of soccer..at least we don’t go around punching people in the face cause were pissed were loosing.
