What A Strike, Eh? Canada’s Goalie Scores Miraculous Last Minute Goal… From Midfield
In 24 years of FIFA World Cup competition, Canada’s U-17 national soccer team has never won a match. They hadn’t even played to a draw during a 13-match streak in which they’d been outscored 45-3.
That changed last night in Pachuca, Mexico, when backup Canadian goalkeeper Quillan Roberts scored a miraculous equalizing goal with three minutes remaining in the match to earn a 2-2 draw against soccer superpower England.
Left unchallenged, Roberts dribbled the ball nearly to midfield before launching it over the heads of teammates and English players, most of whom hold junior contracts with esteemed Premiership sides. The video tells the story:
“Disaster for England,” a phrase all-too-familiar to English soccer fans — but a cause for celebration by Canadian supporters. The Canadian squad faces winless Rwanda Saturday and could earn its first-ever trip to the knockout round with a victory.
