An MLS Fight Turns Participants Into Human Dominoes

Last night, the New York Red Bulls lost 1-0 to the Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS playoffs, but Red Bulls defender Rafael Marquez gave the home crowd the next best thing to a win: senseless fighting. Marquez had the ball as the game ended, and presumably frustrated with the loss, threw the ball at the Galaxy’s Landon Donovan. Whether or not Marquez meant to hit Donovan, the ball does appear to hit the Galaxy star in the leg, and believe it or not, Donovan’s teammates didn’t take kindly to this.

And from there, things went downhill (or got better, depending on your opinion of fighting). The Galaxy went at Marquez, and before you knew it, several players on both teams were involved. It was such an intense scrum, in fact, that it caused a few of the players involved to comically topple over, which nearly caused other players to topple over:

For soccer to continue to grow in popularity in the United States, the best possible thing that could happen would be for MLS to land some more stars like the ones that played in this game (Donovan, David Beckham, Thierry Henry) while they’re still in their primes. The second-best thing that could happen? Quite possibly, more live-action bowling pin sequences like the one above.

The best thing that could happen to US soccer is to seriously avoid the “baby-flopping” that seems indemic in some/many Latin American games.  As soon as somebody loses the ball in a scramble, the reaction is for one of the players to sprawl all over the green, often with the obligitory “my shin really hurts” antics.  It can get so ridiculous (like the game between Santa Fe and Velez that I am watching right now on Fox Sports Vivo) that I cannot see this kind of soccer succeeding in the US.  A major part of the game plan is to draw fouls, merited or not, to get free kicks or shots on goal.  It’s not this bad in the MLS right now but I hope it does not get worse there.   US sports fans do not take kindly to whimps and wussies and the flopping and whining that can happen, no matter how strategic it is claimed to be, will simply turn off too many potential US fans.  Sorry this is somewhat off topic.
