Soccer Players Fight (Literally, Fight) Over Who Gets To Take Penalty Shot

Fights during games = no big deal, unless things get completely out of hand. Things get testy in the heat of competition sometimes. Fights between teammates = slightly bigger deal, but not unheard of. Sometimes things aren’t going too well, and steam has to be let off. Plus, just because you’re competing together doesn’t mean you like each other. But fights between teammates after something good happens to their own team? Those are almost unheard of.

We say “almost” because during a soccer match between Bury and Yeovil in England’s League One this weekend, Bury teammates Steven Schumacher and Giles Coke, well, did exactly that. The occasion: Bury, up 2-1 at the time, got an opportunity for a penalty kick to increase their lead to two goals. The problem: both Schumacher and Coke thought they should be the ones to take that kick. Let the kids-in-schoolyard “My ball!” “No, MY ball!” “Mine! Gimme it!” “No, MINE!” “Nuh-uh!” “Uh-HUH!” “Nuh-uh!” “Uh-HUH!” scuffle commence:

Well, Schumacher (whom Bury’s coach said should be taking those kicks) eventually made the shot, and Bury won 3-2. So all’s well that ends well, we guess.

Not!!!!  Schumacher feels entitled but NOT EARNED….that thinking is over.  Give the right to the player that caused the opportunity–skilled player—-not the panzie.
