Today In Euro 2012 Violence: Russian Fans Vs. Polish Fans

When there’s Euro 2012, there’s violence. This time, rather than a riot police-Croatian fan showdown, it’s Russian and Polish fans fighting each other during the buildup to today’s Group A match between the two squads. Reportedly, a mob of 50 Polish fans attacked a group of Russian fans at a cafe earlier today, wearing masks, throwing smoke grenades and stones.

Via Russia today:

“According to reports, the Russians were marching through the capital when they were attacked by a mob of Polish youths… The Russian fans’ march was set to coincide with Russia Day, celebrated on the 12th of June, and was sanctioned by city authorities.”

This is Russia Today, though, so we’d like a report confirming their “reports.” The same Russia Today that is funded by the Russian government. The one that’s in Russia. The one that Putin is head of. They go on to disclose that at least three people were hospitalized for head injuries, and that unconfirmed reports suggest that a Russian fan was fatally injured.

Warning shots and a water cannon were used by Warsaw police to quell the fighting.
