With An Amazing Goal, Alex Morgan Makes The Case That You Shouldn’t Forget About Women’s Soccer Just Yet

Now that the U.S. women’s soccer team’s World Cup run is over, will the sport of women’s soccer be relegated to the back burner in the American sporting landscape? Will the team’s effort and heartbreaking finish be lost to history as the memory fades? Will names like Hope Solo, Abby Wambach, and Alex Morgan become mere background noise? Well, if they keep making plays like this…maybe not.

Yesterday, Morgan played for her Western New York Flash against the Boston Breakers in a Women’s Professional Soccer game (Morgan was the first pick in the league’s draft earlier this year). The Flash were down 2-1 with only a few minutes left in the game. Morgan, despite not even facing the goal, was somehow able to change that. Watch here:

So, Flash, we’re thinking you made a good pick there. And remember, Morgan just turned 22 earlier this month and was the youngest player on that World Cup team, so the ability to score a goal while kicking the ball backwards with the outside of her foot is going to serve her well for a long time. If the U.S. is going to close the deal at either of the next World Cups, Morgan’s clearly going to be a big part of it. If she keeps playing like this, we like the Americans’ chances.
