As we discussed yesterday, the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers were on the verge of pulling off one of the biggest trades in recent memory. Due to the MLB’s not-so-deadline-y trade deadline, waiver wire deals are not off the table. And, as of this morning, the trade is now official.

If you thought the MLB trade deadline on July 31 came and went without enough moving and shaking, uh, good news: the Red Sox and Dodgers might be on the verge of pulling off a waiver deal that dwarfs not only anything that happened at this year’s deadline, but also the events of many, many deadlines before it.

Well folks, the situation in Boston has gone from bad to worse. The much publicized discontent in the Red Sox clubhouse with divisive manager Bobby Valentine hit a critical mass. A few weeks ago, Adrian Gonzalez led a call to arms and held a meeting with Sox ownership where he and his teammates asked for Valentine to be fired. Read about it after the jump.

Boston Red Sox 1st baseman Adrian Gonzalez has gotten off to a slow start this season, hitting only .283 with 6 HRs and 45 RBIs, and an especially unimpressive .329 OBP.

Dude. A 26-year-old fan named Mike Moon caught one of runner-up Adrian Gonzalez’s long balls at last night’s Home Run Derby — and may have come away with a few phone numbers as well, making a diving catch into the Chase Field swimming pool. Slow clap.

During the second round of last night’s Home Run Derby, Keith Carmickle and his friends got greedy. They had already snagged home run balls from eventual finalists Robinson Cano and Adrian Gonzalez, and when Prince Fielder came to the plate, they wanted to snag another.

So a barefoot Carmickle got on top of a narrow table 20 feet above a right field pool deck. Which would have been a dumb idea to begin with. But when you throw in the fact that, just last week, a firefighter in Texas named Shannon Stone fell to his death after tumbling over a Major League fence, and it was really dumb.

Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is a tremendous hitter who hits the ball hard – and White Sox pitcher Jesse Crain now knows that better than he ever wanted to.

Adrian Gonzalez appears to be off to Boston in a trade for a bunch of prospects that only baseball geeks would know…and SI’s Jon Heyman plays with the hearts of Red Sox fans in reporting that the deal was off and on again.

Today, news broke that the Boston Red Sox are trading for Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Yankees and Rays fans should not like this development. Red Sox fans, though, ought to be extremely happy right now.

The general public may have been robbed of its 2nd perfect game since May 29th last night, but at least it did get its second walk-off grand slam since that date…by a star first baseman…with a 1-1 score…in extra innings.
