It was a fitting end for Andy Roddick’s tennis career – he performed valiantly, ultimately couldn’t overcome a better player, and got to talk about some goofy stuff after the fact. That ending, that goofy thing, and other assorted thoughts after the jump.

Once upon a time, Andy Roddick was the golden boy of American tennis. He was going to carry the torch Sampras and Agassi left behind, the one they themselves got from Connors and McEnroe. And it looked promising at first when Roddick won the 2003 U.S. Open. But along came Federer. And Nadal. And Djokovic. And Murray. And basically the rest of the world, who lapped Roddick and ensured his Open victory would be his first and last major championship. Today, Andy turned the big Three-O, and announced his departure from tennis.

The Masters’ Par 3 Contest is a relatively laid-back event – a “beloved Wednesday tradition [unlike any other].” It doesn’t actually count in the standings, so players can do all sorts of things they normally wouldn’t… like bring in unexpected guests (UPDATE: last year).

Andy Roddick bowed out of the China Open in straight sets today, falling easily to South African Kevin Anderson 4-6, 5-7. Roddick later called that performance “unacceptable”…and apparently, he thought the same of one reporter’s question.

Andy Roddick pulled no punches in an interview with Chris Fowler after his first-round victory at the U.S. Open, saying the job of tennis analyst is “the easiest job in the world,” one that “doesn’t take much thought.”

Andy Roddick lost in the first round of the Western and Southern Open yesterday, thanks in part to a penalty for hitting a ball into the stands. He thinks penalties like this are part of a larger, wimpier problem in pro tennis.
