The 1980-81 season was Mike Krzyzewski’s first as the head coach of the Duke men’s basketball team. The little-known coach had spent the five previous seasons at Army and Tobacco Road was squarely in the hands of already legendary UNC coach Dean Smith. Coach K has since cemented his reputation as one of the greatest coaches in NCAA history, but had to do it without one Michael Jordan, to whom he wrote this letter after Jordan opted for Smith, Carolina and the Tar Heels.

Today in “news you probably expected but is still significant now that it’s official”: when North Carolina tips off against Ohio at 7:47 Eastern, it’ll be doing so without point guard Kendall Marshall. Marshall, of course, broke his wrist in the Tar Heels’ second “third”-round win over Creighton last weekend, and had surgery on it shortly thereafter. Starting in Marshall’s place will be freshman Stilman White.

Currently, UNC-Duke bragging rights belong with UNC after the Tar Heels dispatched the Blue Devils 88-70 on Saturday. And UNC’s student government took full advantage of these bragging rights… maybe a little too much.

Tonight at 7pm, one of sport’s most storied rivalries will take center stage, as Duke and North Carolina will battle for the ACC regular season title in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
