You’re probably here because you didn’t watch sports on TV last night. Which means you hate J.R. Smith. And last night was a bad night to hate J.R. Smith.

It wasn’t a good day for Rory McIlroy. After a disappointing finish to his opening round at the Honda Classic on Thursday (he bogeyed the par-5 18th hole to finish at an even 70 on the day), the world’s top-ranked player got off to an absolutely terrible start today. And then, he… just walked off.

Tiger Woods missed the cut at a golf tournament. That’s rare. But that’s nothing compared to the way it happened… and why it was able to happen that way. After the jump, we explain.

Rory McIlroy started off the third round of the PGA Championship well today, knocking in two birdies on the first two holes. But on No. 3, McIlroy’s tee shot went astray, missing the fairway left. Except the ball never landed, and everyone crowded around a leafless tree trying to find the damn thing.

Rory McIlroy got off to a solid start at The Open Championship today, posting a 3-under 67 that left him three shots back of leader Adam Scott (and tied with Tiger Woods). But just as McIlroy is within striking distance of the lead, spectators are within striking distance too… specifically, striking distance of errant tee shots.

The crowd at Madison Square Garden were all smiles tonight, and believe it or not it had nothing to do with Jeremy Lin. No, they were watching tennis (indoors?). Exhibition tennis, nonetheless. And before they knew it, the match between Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki turned from strange to bizarre.

Back when Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki were first known to be an item, we said how the idea of the cute female tennis star hooking up with the cute guy golf star reminded us of something you might see at “a boarding school in New Hampshire.” Well, now that we’ve seen the two kiss in front of Yale’s football team in New Haven, Conn. after Wozniacki won a spot in the New Haven Open’s final (she won it today) – with Rory sporting a Yale jersey, no less – we’ve come reasonably close to that scenario.
