Stan Van Gundy’s handshake deal with ESPN has fallen through, and now there are whispers that NBA commissioner David Stern played a part in killing the deal. Van Gundy is pissed, and made some very interesting comments about the Worldwide Leader in Sports. Those comments, after the jump.

Of course Jeff Van Gundy would be angry: the Magic just fired his brother Stan as head coach, as part of their ongoing desperate attempt to hold on to Dwight Howard. But even for a guy you’d expect to be upset, it’s impressive just how little Jeff Van Gundy thinks of the Magic – and team CEO Alex Martins in particular.

There are reports saying Dwight Howard told Magic owner Rich DeVos that he will not play for Stan Van Gundy again. Other sources are saying that this is “B.S.” One thing is for sure: Dwight Howard is not winning anybody over with this behind-the-scenes scheming. Plus, he’s going to have back surgery. One 16-point home loss later, and the uncomfortable Stan Van Gundy-Dwight Howard situation in Orlando remains unresolved. The Inside the NBA team tackled the controversy last night, with interesting results.

Right after Stan Van Gundy essentially said he knew his star player was conspiring against him, that very star player walked into the interview — apparently, Howard had only heard bits and pieces of the interview, and not that he had just been outed  – and put his arm around Van Gundy. And holy moly was it awkward to watch.

Howard, who could have become a free agent at the end of this season but chose to stay in Orlando another year, is said to have a lot of sway with ownership, who are desperate to keep their main attraction over the long term.

The Raptors lost at home last night to the Magic, 117-101. Not a lot for the Toronto crowd to celebrate with a score like that, right? WRONG. The crowd went wild on a Raptors basket with seconds left to go… confusing Magic coach Stan Van Gundy in the process.
