Watch A Boston Red Sox Sportswriter Jinx The Boston Red Sox

During a rain delay in last night’s Red Sox-Orioles game, Boston’s broadcast decided to kill some time by speaking with Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy. At the time that this interview takes place, the Red Sox have a slim 3-2 lead over the Orioles in the bottom of the 7th.

More importantly, though, the Rays are losing 7-0 to the Yankees in the eighth inning. Hardly anyone thought Tampa Bay could come back, and with a Rays loss the Red Sox were assured an AL Wild Card tie at the very least. So Shaughnessy made his prediction: the Rays would lose and the Red Sox would live to play another day. It was a perfectly reasonable thing to say.

After Epic Red Sox Collapse, Boston’s Front Pages Are Predictably Depressing

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the Red Sox completed one of the biggest collapses in baseball history last night.

Up nine games on the Tampa Bay Rays for an AL Wild Card spot on September 2nd, Boston proceeded to go 7-20 this month, completing their collapse with a 4-3 loss to the Orioles last night after leading 3-2 in the ninth inning.

When the smoke cleared, the Sox were out of the playoffs and Boston’s worst fears were realized. Here are the newspaper headlines that greeted the city, which are predictably gloomy.

Watch The Rays’ Dan Johnson Hit An Insane Game-Tying, Pinch-Hit Home Run Against The Yankees

Holy crap, everyone. The Rays were down 7-0 to the Yankees tonight, the playoff hopes they’d spent the last month building back up from nothing in peril. Then, they exploded in the eighth inning, pulling within a run. Then, down to their last strike in the ninth inning, hope returned…not a moment too soon.

Manny Being Manny Allegedly Means Hitting Manny’s Wife

If there was anyone still clinging to the image of Manny Ramirez as a lovable offbeat wacky guy, safe to say this latest bit of news will probably relieve them of that notion. Yesterday, he was arrested at his Florida home and charged with battery after a domestic dispute with his wife. It hasn’t been a banner year for Ramirez, and this is the least encouraging development yet.
