“You’re Going To Be Okay”: Andy Murray Got Emotional When He Dedicated A Win To A Friend With Cancer (Video)

On Saturday, Andy Murray successfully defended his Brisbane International title when he defeated Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (7-0) 6-4. Afterward, he dedicated the win to “one of his best friends back home,” his voice nearly cracking from emotion while he spoke.
“You’re going to be okay,” he said. “You’re going to get through.”
Murray’s comments — which you can watch below — are quick, but the context in which he made these comments make them compelling. The world’s number three was in a vulnerable state, and it showed.
Although Murray wouldn’t tell the press who he was referring to in his post-match speech, we’d later find out it was Ross Hutchins, a fellow British Davis Cup player and longtime friend of Murray’s. Hutchins, who’s 27 years old and ranked 28th in the world in doubles, is one of Murray’s closest friends, accompanies him at his Florida training camps, and often attends his matches.
Over Christmas, Hutchins had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph glands. He made the news public after Murray’s speech.
Happy New Year to all!Unfortunately I will be away from tennis for a while as I was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma..
— Ross Hutchins (@RoscoHutchins) January 6, 2013
I am doing well, very positive with excellent medical support, friends and family around me. Looking forward to being back on the court soon!

Luckily, Hodgkin’s is considered one of the most curable forms of cancer, especially if it’s caught early. We’re not sure where Hutchins is at in terms of detection, treatment, or prognosis, but his tweets certainly sound optimistic.
Here are Murray’s comments.
