A Fuming Marcos Baghdatis Smashes Four Racquets In 30 Seconds, Sets New Standard For Tennis Freakouts

Marcos Baghdatis was upset. There he was at the Australian Open, the major where he’s achieved the most success (he was a finalist there back in 2006), and after a straight-set opening-round victory, he was flaming out against Stanislas Wawrinka. It wasn’t even that horrible a beating (the final was 7-6(3), 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in favor of Wawrinka),but it was a loss. Baghdatis was frustrated. And when tennis players get frustrated, they smash racquets. However, Baghdatis’ was no ordinary racquet-smashing. See what we mean:

Have you ever seen someone smash four racquets? That was practically all of them! He didn’t even look that mad by the end of it – it was almost like he was trying too hard to keep the bit going. Only in reality (to us, at least), he kept the bit going the exact right length of time, because a racquet-smashing freakout of this magnitude was unprecedented. And let’s face it: this was Baghdatis’ best chance at leaving a lasting mark on this tournament. The men’s field is just too top-heavy to think anyone can realistically make a fairy tale run and win the thing. Baghdatis will have to settle for the ruined racquets as his contribution to the 2012 Australian Open. That’s more than enough for us.
