Classy: Novak Djokovic Remembers 9/11 In Post-Match Speech
It’s been a bit of an odd time for major sporting events (U.S. Open, start of the NFL season), since running through such usually boisterous occasions is the somber remembrance of the September 11, 2001 attacks. It’s a delicate balancing act to properly observe such a terrible event while also enjoying sports, but in their speeches following their excellent U.S. Open final match, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal managed to do just that.
Of course, it was especially important for them to do so since the U.S. Open takes place in New York City. Yes, maybe they were coached by a PR team on what to say and when to say it. Maybe a PR team put that FDNY cap on Djokovic’s head. Whatever the genesis of it, it was a smart move, and no matter how it came about, it was good of Djokovic and Nadal to pay their respects to what happened 10 years ago in their speeches. You can see Djokovic’s speech above, but Nadal mentioned it too. Nice work, guys – both during the match and after.
