Serena Williams Was Reduced To Tears During Her Shocking French Open Loss

Today was the type of day for Serena Williams that makes it hard to believe that this was less than a year ago. She suffered the first first-round loss of her Grand Slam career, falling to 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3, but even more striking than the stunning result was how miserable she looked out there at times. Specifically, when she dropped that second set tiebreak, she looked like this:

Serena hasn’t always harbored the most fondness for tennis – she’s said so herself. But this was beyond looking like tennis was a chore – Serena looked miserable, and it was tough to watch. And as much as you might wish she had more fun doing something she’s clearly so spectacularly gifted at… you can’t force it. If she’s unhappy, she’s unhappy.

Fortunately, she sounded like she was in slightly better spirits afterward, obviously still disappointed by the loss but saying that “it’s life” and it’s “nothing [she] can’t deal with.” We hope she deals with it by not only having more on-court success, but by having more on-court fun. Because if you can’t enjoy all that success… is it even success?
