Yaroslava Shvedova Wins Golden Set In Third Round Of Wimbledon
Unranked Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan upset the 10th-seeded Sara Errani in the third round of Wimbledon today, 6-0, 6-4. Except that “0″ was of particular significance, as Shvedova won every single point of the first set. That’s perfection at its finest, people.
Shvedova hit 14 winners and four aces during her 24-point streak, needing only 15 minutes to win the first set. According to Chris McKendry, this is the first golden set since Bill Scanlon achieved the feat in 1983.
You have to feel bad for Errani – she was not only defeated by an unranked opponent, but she got smacked around in historic fashion. And she has to own this one alone, too, with tennis being an individual sport and everything.
On the bright side, she broke Shvedova in the first game of the second set. So there’s that.
