Do You Believe In … Ties? Co-Champions Declared In Scripps National Spelling Bee

  • Rick Chandler

Of course there’s going to have to be a rematch. The spelling community is simply going to demand it. For the first time since 1962, the Scripps National Spelling Bee ends with co-champions: because the organizers stupidly refused to even open my proposal for a tiebreaking wrestling competition.

Sriram Hathwar of Painted Post, NY, and Ansun Sujoe of Fort Worth, Texas, get to share the big trophy.

And Twitter rejoices::

After each boy spelled 12 words correctly in the championship round — the equivalent of a nine-inning dual no-hitter — judges declared them both winners. For one thing they only had 25 championship words prepared. For another, “Baseball Tonight” has to start on time!

OK, all you losing spellers — that confetti isn’t going to clean up itself. Chop-chop.
