Forbes Thinks That Roger Federer Is The Most Powerful Athlete In The World
The verdict is in: Roger Federer is the most powerful athlete in the world according to a Forbes analysis that measures celebrities based on yearly earnings, press mentions, and Internet/social media presence. Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga are the top two on the list, but Federer comes in at a very respectable eighth overall.
Federer is among some elite company in the top 10, which also includes Steven Spielberg, Beyonce, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Justin Bieber, and Ellen DeGeneres. Federer ranks 17th overall in yearly earnings after making $71 million over the last 12 months. His television and radio mentions rank is 45th and his overall press rank is 7th. Federer is ranked 41st overall for marketability and 33rd overall for social rank.
Tiger Woods and LeBron James are the next two athletes on the list, coming in at 15 and 16 overall. David Beckham, who recently retired from the sport of soccer, ranks at 19. Quite fittingly, Kobe Bryant ranks at 24, which is of course his number.
This list makes you wonder how Forbes measures media mentions and Internet presence. You would think that Tiger Woods and LeBron James both edge Roger Federer in those categories by a large margin, at least in the United States, which is where Forbes says their study is focused. Woods earned more than Federer, raking in $78 million. LeBron James only pulled in $60 million, but he has to be the most talked about athlete in America besides Tim Tebow, who is thankfully not on the list.
In an extremely unscientific study involving six of my friends, nobody mentioned Roger Federer when asked who they think the top three most powerful athletes in the world are based on the Forbes’ criteria. LeBron James made everyone’s list and Tiger Woods made most of them, but a few wildcards were thrown in there.
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning were both mentioned. Brady is 65th on the list and Manning did not make it. Floyd “Money” Mayweather got one vote, but he’s 88th. One friend said Tim Tebow, immediately disqualifying him from the study.
But Roger Federer was nowhere to be seen. Is he actually the most powerful athlete in the world? Does he deserve that top spot on the Forbes list? We’re scratching our heads over this one, and so is Roger in the picture above.
