How To Turn A Bunt Into An Inside-The-Park Home Run

Inside-the-park homers are tough enough to manufacture as it is. But what should have been an easy out, or perhaps an infield single, turned into another run for the USA against Australia in the World Cup of Softball last night. The Americans won the game and the championship, 3-0.

Michelle Moultrie, left fielder for the USA softball team and former Florida Gator, demonstrates how this extremely rare feat is done. It’s three simple steps, really:

1) Lay down a great bunt.
2) Hope the other team commits an egregious throwing error.
3) Run like hell.

Watch and learn:

Yes — to be fair, this is not an inside-the-park home run, but a four-base error. But, as someone who once scored a run in the same set of circumstances (though not during the World Cup of Softball), I can attest that it’s a lot more enjoyable to think of it as a homer on your part than a mistake on their part. Nice going, Michelle.
