After Yesterday’s Title Fight, A Bloodier Fight Erupted At The Press Conference

Dereck Chisora lost last night to WBC champion Vitali Klitschko, but that wasn’t all the fighting he did. That was thanks to David Haye, another British heavyweight, who came to the press conference, aimed some trash talking Chisora’s way… and left after hitting Chisora in the head with a glass bottle and generally making a mess.

The brawl broke out not long after Haye, ostensibly at the press conference to ask questions for television, started taunting Chisora over his loss. After a few minutes of yelling insults back and forth to one another in distinguished British accents, Chisora left the stage and went after Haye, who was holding a glass bottle in his hand which he allegedly used to hit Chisora. The altercation starts at about the 2:10 mark below:

Haye’s trainer, Adam Boothe, was hit in the face with a tripod and started bleeding, which made for an equally dramatic and messy standoff with Chisora after Haye fled the room. Chisora told Boothe that he would “physically burn [Haye],” which may be English slang or may be a literal threat to light the man on fire.

Despite taking place not long after two men beat the hell out of each other in the ring, this press conference brawl was universally panned by all attending. Wladimir Klitschko, brother of Vitali, was quoted as saying:  ”I’m totally disappointed. It went a little too far, the sport of boxing shouldn’t be like that.”

German police were also pretty unhappy with the second fight, as they arrested Chisora and charged him with simple assault before releasing him this morning. Haye was also wanted for questioning but he had already left for England.
