Watch This Last-Place Runner Slam Into Final Hurdle And Get Injured In The Saddest Olympic Moment Ever

Imagine you’re Getahun Birhan, Ethiopian steeplechaser. You’ve trained your entire 21-year life to get to the Olympics, and you finally made it — this year, in London. But your race doesn’t go exactly as planned. As you turn the final corner and peek at the remaining 100-meter straightaway, you’re sitting in dead last. Only one runner is still competing, and he’s about to finish. You can’t do anything to affect the results. You just want it all to be over. Complete the race. Say that you finished an Olympic event, even if you come in last. It’s OK. You made it there; no one will make fun of you. As long as you don’t, like, make a fool out of yourself or anything. You better not be laughing, everyone! The 3,000-meter steeplechase is an exhausting event. Getting over that last hurdle, especially when your confidence is shattered, has got to be brutal. But, man, this was bad. Seriously, though, don’t laugh! He tried to get up and finish the race, but failed. He was escorted off the track on a wheelchair. Horrible.

In related news, James Harden and the Nigerian basketball team reportedly breathed a collective sigh of relief, as haters redirected the focus of their energy towards poor Getahun.

Wow – is that hurdle made out of Kryptonite? Poor guy just bounced off. That has to be the least forgiving hurdle I have ever seen.

That actually brought tears to my eyes.  At least he got to compete – it’s more than 99% of us can say.  He is the 1%.
