Here’s Our Response To The Dutch Speed Skating Coach Who Dissed American Football

We’ll just get right into it. Here’s what Jillert Anema said to CNBC’s Squawk Box on Thursday morning:

[Buzzfeed] “You have a lot of attention on a foolish sport like American football and you waste a lot of talent, athletic talent, on a sport that is meant to kill each other, to injure each other. … You’re so narrow-minded, and then you want to compete against the world [in other sports] when you waste a lot of time, good talent on a sport that sucks.”

He also implied we make up our own sports (like football) to feel like we’re special. Great. Ok, we’ll start there.

- This man’s name is Jillert. Apparently Dutch people make up names so they can feel special.

- “When [Americans] play soccer, you’re not…the top thirty of the world.” True, except for the fact that we’re currently ranked 13th, three spots behind The Netherlands — who, by the way, have won exactly the same number of World Cups as us. Glad the choke artists are lecturing us on which sports we should pretend to dominate. Keep it coming, Jillert…

- “All your talent is wasted on football.” Ya, because 400-pound men are a hot commodity in tennis. Get real, dude. American football is series of very specialized athletes. Regardless, if the number of Americans playing football is diluting our pool of potential speed skaters then it makes it all the more amazing that we manage to field very competitive/successful/dominant athletes in literally every Olympic sport. Perhaps if The Netherlands didn’t allocate so many resources to speed skating, they’d actually have a World Cup.

- “You can make your own game, like American football, do it your own way and think your the best of the world.” You’re right, we should probably ditch the whole “innovation” thing and stick to the script. No more making new sports that are fun to watch — we’ll go back to the basics. Discus, Greco-Roman Wrestling, and the Dutch national sport of Fierljeppen. Can’t wait to Alshon Jeffery try to break Bart Helmholt’s record in that one.

- “You always think you’re right.” Says the guy making broad statements about 311 million people. At least we’re not always named “Jillert.” Next…

- “[Speed skating] is an honest sport. There are no tricks involved. It’s just about who is the best in the world…a Gold medal in speed skating is just as valuable as a Gold medal in basketball.” Oh ya, because there are so many tricks involved in figuring out the best basketball team in the world in. European sports (and especially speed skating) are notorious for convoluting the debate as to “who’s the best in the world,” because they break everything down into some many different tournaments. Is it more important to win in the Champions League or the domestic league? The domestic league cup or the domestic league tournament? Euro Cup or the World Cup? Talk about hedging your bets with the whole “Best in the world” business…

Moreover, if speed skating was just about finding “the best speed skater in the world,” then there’d be one event, not 22. Or is the 1000m the real measure of a speed skater? If basketball was anything like speed skating, the All-Star weekend competitions would be Olympic sports as well, and maybe then those soft-ass European players could have some success to hang their hats on. But that’s not how we roll, because we have an “honest” and straightforward way of determining what a champion is. It’s called “a game.”

- “[Football] is meant to kill each other, to injure each other. … You’re so narrow-minded.” Spoken like a true Dutch speed skating coach. Football has the same objective as every other sport — including speed skating — which is for all the players to get laid. Now who’s the narrow-minded one!

- “You won’t beat us, not in four years, not in eight years.” Oh, because Shani Davis didn’t win the Men’s 1000m Gold in Vancouver four years ago. Ya, count us out because we have a tough couple of weeks. There is one thing, however, we’ll probably never beat you in, and that’s in the 1500m “inferiority complex” event. You’ll always take Gold in that one, bud.

Now watch this terrible rendition of the Star Spangled Banner performed Daytona International Speedway…

  • usazeromedalsinspeedskating

You are such an idiot. You really cofirm the American stereotype. You really compare the USA soccer team to the Dutch team based on fifa ranking? USA doesn’t mean shit in soccer world. You know it, I know it so don’t give us Dutch this shit you’re telling.

Please take your loss and go wine about how your suits were not good. Oh wait, without the suits you still skated like little 5 year olds…

Boehoe give the man an ice cream….

  • Jake O’Donnell

He just said we’re not even in the top 30. We are in the top 30. We’re in the top 13, actually. It may not mean anything, but neither does losing World Cups or winning 20-something speed skating medals. This dude was out of line.

  • winston noordkaap

lets just not get too serious on this – amema gets a bit over the top. in the end: whatever sport you make up: just have fun with it without condemning people or even countries that think another sport is way cooler..

  • msf

Way to get fixated on one point, dude.

  • msf

Does this guy not realize America dominates in pretty much every Olympics? This big story this year is about what America is doing wrong, but we still lead in the medal count (as of yesterday). I’d say the US is doing pretty good.

  • Ed

msf: “I’d say the US is doing pretty good.” In decent English that is : “doing pretty well”"

  • orange rules

Well there is a difference in doing good and doing well ….
America has 315 million people and The Netherlands about 16, so when u calculate the number of medals per person is making it a bit more clearer i guess…. Downside is the dutch only win with speedskating.
And concerning soccer, the americans are really 2 steps behind.
When there are 10 games USA vs. Holland i guess the dutch will win 50% more than the americans.
But that is because when boys grow up in Holland u r supposed to play soccer outside and the other options come later in highschool (basketball, baseball) American football is not an option Rugby might be later on..
So there are cultural differences and there always be opinions about the others as well.

  • Guest

As a Dutch person who grew up in the states, my interpretation was that the guy was just trying to get a rise out of people and have a little fun with the commentators, and his statements weren’t meant to be taken all that seriously. Perhaps that intention got lost with broken English. You’re reaction strikes me as taking it all a little too seriously.

  • Joey678

As a Dutch person who grew up in the states, my interpretation was that the guy was just trying to get a rise out of people and have a little fun with the commentators, and his statements weren’t meant to be taken all that seriously. Perhaps that intention got lost with broken English, or just lost in cultural differences. Everyone here is just kind of laughing about him being silly. So really you’re reaction strikes me as taking it all far too seriously and not in the way the comments were intended.

  • BennyIsMyNameBeerIsMyGame

    Also,you suck at Hockey!

    MMMMWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

    ……….*cough*……….

    ….I’m sorry.

  • msf

Oh to horror. Thank you so much for correcting me. Damn. I don’t know what I’d ever do with my life if it weren’t for the random internet grammar Nazis hanging around to be everyone’s adult English teacher.

  • Anonymous

Trying to get a rise by being a jingoistic antiAmerican douche bag? No. The guy was just a jingoistic antiAmerican douche bag

  • Anonymous

And, you confirm every dbag antiAmerican Euro turd stereotype. And, here’s an newsflash for you and your silly disses about American soccer. WE DON’T GIVE A RAT’S STINKING ASS about friggin soccer. In the US, soccer is a children’s game.

  • Cliff Masterson

One big outcry of national butthurt because of the opinion of one guy (and in the process completely missing the point).. come on guys, he was clearly not 100% serious. I guess burning a quran causes less controversy than admitting that american football is not your favorite sport..

  • John Henson

If any dutch pussy played a single down in football, theyd get their body snapped in half. They shiver in their boots to even have the thought of playing football. Only the worlds toughest men play this gladiator sport. Name another sport that has athletes at 6’6 330 lbs running a 4.8 40 yard

  • Guest

    WWE
Or does it have to be a real sport… America…

  • john candle

    Just a few things:

    1. To the CNBC anchor/idiot…NASCAR goes “around and around”.
    2. I think team sports are a little stupid in the Olympics given the professional leagues and players with multiple passports (yes…that includes Basketball)
    3. The US has PLENTY of world class athletes in every sport. If the Dutch coach wants to see pure athleticism, he should watch CrossFit.
    4. The Winter Olympics are rather dull.
    5. I’ve spent plenty of time in Amsterdam and have never heard anyone talking about speedskating.

  • Anonymous

First of don’t lump every Dutch person in with this one guys opinion (I know it’s hopeless). Second if the U.S. spend it’s resources on sports other countries play you would dominate them.It is exactly because the U.S. play their own sports that other countries can achieve things. The U.S. is the most sports crazy country in the world. The money involved in the top three most popular games dwarf any other professional sport league out there. So please keep distracting yourself with your own favorite games.Sometimes people really do not know what they are wishing for.

  • john candle

You are living in a bubble. The US does not dominate in every Olympics. Norway has won more WInter Olympic medals than the US. The US shares success with many countries at the top of the table. The US has dominated the summer games because of our the sad truth of slavery which, like it or not, injected the US population with strong, athletic Africans.

  • Frank Baine

Jillert…a typical dutch/euro clown…been there, know them and remain unimpressed. They’re still steaming over getting crushed by the Germans in W.W2 and continually in soccer ever since. Still whin.ing about all their bicycles relocated to the Russian front. Constantly clogging the German Autobahns with go.oney little camper trainers and uri.nating in full view of everyone. Own a clow.nish language so ridiculous even the dutch don’t like it. The dutch contribution to the world is crawling up your bu.tt, telling you everything that is wrong and having no clue how to fix it. A nothing country whose citizens once declared they didn’t care if they were invaded by a foreign army, as long as it didn’t disrupt their ign.orant lives, despised by most Europeans (so what) good only for cheese, wooden clogs and apparently Fierljeppen (say it in dutch…sounds really stu.pid).

  • john candle

Yes. Talking rationally about sports with sports fans is almost hopeless. Don’t worry, there are tens (maybe hundreds) of millions of Americans who are above the fray.

You make a funny point about how good it is that the US lets other people compete (have their Olympcs). Maybe the Dutch coach is throwing down the gauntlet. He’s board with dominance and wants some competition!

  • Frank Baine

News flash ‘zero’… most Americans care as much about speed skating as luge and yes, even Fierljeppen. Adults in tights, bent over and going in circles…we can see why it is so appealing to the dutch.
Read the note above eurolos.er, you’ll enjoy it. And yes, your FIFA standing does su.ck and yes the Germans will always beat you.

  • Frank Baine

That’s very nice, perhaps you can focus on being a world power in ping pong too. On the real world stage, Holland is….well, nothing. Oh, and the Germans crushed the dutch like a pimple in about 2 days and still have them under their boot. Orange rules nothing of importance. Embrace it. Once you actually win the World Cup, let us know.

  • Anonymous

I think he was trying to be funny but it didn’t come across as such (or he was just being a jerk).I’ve been to the U.S. , I have relatives who migrated there so I have a feeling for how sports crazy the country is.You hardly see empty seats at sporting events.Priorities in the average Americans life are work/school,family,church,sport in about that order.I think only soccer like the top leagues in Europe can compete with some of the most popular games in the U.S. like basketball.baseball with money being spend on them.My uncle who is an American told me , he said you think soccer is not popular here but it actually is . among woman. In womans soccer the U.S. is kind of like the Brazil of male soccer. Also with the large number of Latino migrants male soccer is actually growing as well. MLS is already larger money wise then some of the medium sized established soccer leagues in Europe. There is just a ton of money being spend on sports in the U.S.

  • Matt

Everyone who is saying “Oh USA is 13th not 31 fifa ranking” is wrong. USA’s last 20 games were against countries that arent even in the top 40. How do can u compare matches against central american teams to prime European football. Plus, Brazil is ranked 10th, so it just goes to show how bad the ranking system is.

  • Cliff Masterson

It’s not Dutch, it’s Frisian.. and stop whining like a little bitch because someone dislikes your favorite sport..

  • O. Willem Beck

As a citizen of the Netherlands – residing in the United States, I’m appalled and ashamed after viewing and listening to this rather uncouth individual. Please do not judge the people of Holland (not even the Frisians) by the primitive behavior of this clown.

  • Yodamite

As an American, I thought the Dutch guy was funny, and he brought up some good points. I’m kind of sick of the obsession we Americans have with our own sports, and I find it a bit ridiculous that our guy up there was ridiculing speed skating (“going around and ’round”) when our most popular motorsports are frickin’ NASCAR and Indycar (“going around and ’round”). F1 is a far more exciting sport than NASCAR, and we haven’t had an American F1 team in so many years. I also despise the NFL for how they’ve ruined cable television by forcing subscribers to subsidize their costly partnership with ESPN.

  • Harold van Beek

Yes Jake O’Donnell, those Dutch live all in windmills, wear wooden-shoes and are born with a finger in the dike! They should just pull the plug and let the sea water flush those Dutch out. The USA is invincible! We don’t need Olympics! We just create championships and call ourselves World Champions if we win our national competition. We have the World Series Baseball and call ourselves World Champions. What do those Dutch know about baseball anyway? Oops, the Dutch were World Champions Baseball in 2011 too? Where was the USA then? Oh, the USA was missing their best players. Yeah that was it! Oh, they were playing for their native countries like Puerto Rica, Japan, Dominican Republic and Cuba. The Dutch beat Cuba which unfortunately the USA was not able to do many times. And as far as the USA soccer team is concerned… they are bigger on the other side of the ocean for the Dutch! Too bad the Americans do not appreciate what this team has done and achieved in the recent decade. I think I understand what Jillert (a Dutch name that was existing when the USA was not even discovered by Columbus) meant. If you put all your eggs in one basket, you will miss the train. The times of Eric Heiden where someone could win by just working harder than the rest are over. There is a lot more to it and that takes investing in your sport. So invest in other sports too!

  • Anonymous

I don’t know anything about speedskating, but regardless of all the BS, something weird seems to have happened. Before the Olympics, the Dutch were good, but various other countries had many world record holders, big meet wins, etc. In addition, many of those people competed in Sochi. How could the Dutch win just
about EVERYTHING in so many races?

    https://www.google.com/#q=2014+speedskating+medals

Plus, the results are even more amazing because in various relay events, the Dutch couldn’t take all 3 places. (Also, it seems ridiculous to have such a huge number of medals for what is an almostunfollowed sport in many countries. Meanwhile, a major sport such has hockey has 1 of each type for men and women. Of course, this isn’t the only example of that, but it seems quite extreme.)

Anyway, did the Dutch come up with better skates, suits, or whatever? I suppose it could be some dramatic training breakthrough, but how likely is that? Did whatever the cause of the U.S. flop was also affect other non-Dutch teams? Then, of course, there are the nasty possibilities …. I have no idea, but stranger things have happened.

  • Giso ten Brink

Butthurt Americans, who doesnt love them. All he tried was motivating the US people with his Dutch sense of humor. And about the amount of medals.. quality over quantity. US also has 20 times MORE inhabitants. so.. they should have 20 times more medals than us. instead they have approximately the same amount haha

  • Giso ten Brink

Maybe youre just another American douchebag? Self reflection dude..

  • ohcanada

And what do American football players wear…yes tights and can’t seem to resist smacking each others butt for some reason.

  • ohcanada

Speed skaters JUST LIKE NASCAR make left hand turns in a circle. I agree about the ruination of cable. I won’t subscribe because I have zero use for umpteen channels playing a sport I have no interest in.

  • ohcanada

Rugby is a mans sport…no padding and yes they can run. And not with the stop start to catch their breath like NFL. Most NFL players would pass out if they had to play a running game without the “rest periods”.

  • ohcanada

So can the rest of the world who might bump into a typical “ugly American” have the same sweeping view of ALL americans? We have enough reality TV to show the world just how stupid and ignorant some Americans can really be and the fact that many actually watch that crap. Honey Boo Boo is an embarrassment and a perfect example.

  • ohcanada

Never understood the “World Champions” of something that is merely a national competition. Narcissistic much?

  • WestSeattleBound

As an American, I completely agree. The reality garbage on TV is embarrassing and the amount of people that watch it is more embarrassing. To the American that says no one here cares about soccer, do me a favor and don’t speak on our nation’s behalf. I love football and soccer equally.

  • Nick

    Columbus discovered USA?

  • Harold van Beek

Columbus discovered America, but only in the USA you have Columbus-day so I tried to keep it simple enough to make it understandable for everyone. A lot of Americans don’t have a clue where the Netherlands is or their culture and like that interviewer shows the lack of knowledge about anything. He compares the Dutch economy with the USA economy. Well, why don’t we compare the debt of the USA with the debt of the Netherlands. The unemployment numbers and so on. Do not forget what the Dutch did for the USA.

  • Frank Baine

AT least they are doing (mostly) manly things…I’m sure your sordid ‘nuck fantasies rely heavily on exactly the backsides of these large, manly men in tights, groping each others buttocks with abandon, titillating our northern neighbors’ prurient thoughts. I can’t even imagine what dutch or canadian speedskaters do in their tights, but I’m certain you are quite familiar.

  • amir

America got the second most medals overall in Sochi of any country, including Netherlands. So u can take ur gay speed skating and shove it up ur ass.

  • amir

spoken like a true leftist eurocunt who has to always include racism in an anti american debate. And i’m black btw.

  • amir

Except NFL players have already participated in Rugby matches. So uh… yeah.

  • amir

And whats that exactly? Or should i remind u what the US did for the dutch. WW2 cough cough.

  • amir

It wouldn’t surprise me if Steroids played a role. Its no longer very difficult to mask drugs in the human body if u know what to eat and drink.

  • amir

Explain where u got the same amount of medals? US was ranked second after Russia in over all medals

  • john

why is this guy so insulting, its the olympics terrible sportsmanship an very disrespectful comments, iam an american we tried an did not succeed life goes on there are more important issues like saving your ass in world war two.

  • Giso ten Brink

quality over quantity, dutch: 15 million poeple, murricans 311 million. lol most of you stuff burgers all day. you idiots have ONE gold medal more haha.

  • Hans

Thank you Beck – best response thus far

  • Hans

WWE is entertainment for children, not a sport in USA. Nice try though …

  • Harold van Beek

You are the first who reminds me of WWII…NOT! The Dutch weer one of the parties who liberated the now USA from the British and how about Iraq, Afghanistan, Katrina. This is exactly why we need to accept the differences between countries. Even the Pilgrims came from the Netherlands and switched ships in England (Mayflower). So how far do we have to go back. This Dutch coach was merely saying that if you focus on Football, don’t expect miracles in skating. If the skating championship is not important then do NOT mention Eris Heiden. You can’t have it both ways. Comparing apples to oranges is ignorance by the interviewer.

  • Harold van Beek

There are two important ingredients for the Dutch successes. Facilities and scientific approach. The USA trained at high altitude in Salt Lake City. For the Football fans, that is the advantage that the Broncos have over a lot of other teams when they play a home game. Sochi was at sea level (the same as the Netherlands). The Dutch started to use a new spike study. They took all the results of the last two years and put these in a diagram for the sporters and tried to predict the highest medal outcome without looking at the individual sporter. The Dutch have always been good at Skating events.
Let me tell you a true story:
Just before Nagano Olympics, the Dutch announced that they had a new type of suits. This was just days before the games. The whole skating world was in panic. Everyone was trying to lay a hand on those suits. It turned out that the Dutch never used those suits because they were not good at all. They just were using these suits on training events and they looked sharp and fast.
It still is a good joke in the Netherlands.
The University of Groningen in the Netherlands have been involved in the scientific approach and the data information. This has turned out to be successful and where in the old days, the USA was always good in determining when to have their spike moment, this time it was the Dutch.
One other thing which makes a difference is that the Dutch have professional teams where most other countries don’t. In these teams some of the foreign skaters are also member but those are limited.

  • Harold van Beek

Yes, you are right! But now compare the United States of America with the United States of Europe. Take in consideration that Europe is even smaller than the USA.

  • Harold van Beek

I think you need to re-write history because did the USA do this to help the Netherlands? Then why weren’t day not involved in WWII before December 7th 1941?

  • Harold van Beek

John, I agree with you and maybe it sounded disrespectful but I know it was not intended. Please picture yourself expressing yourself in a non-native language after being successful and having to defend yourself for a winning program. During the Olympics, Norway accused the Dutch skaters of PED’s and retracted themselves from the 10K. The sports announcers from the USA (I am sorry, no harm meant) basically demanding medals in speed-skating. The man obviously shows respect to the USA speed skaters. That stupid interviewer can only come up with Eric Heiden’s success! How about the other successes of the USA speed skaters like Davis, Cheek, Jansen, Muller and women like Bonnie Blair and Sheila Young. Where is the USA pride for these people. As a skating fan myself, I thing THAT is ignorant.
Now as far as your remark on WWII is concerned. I think that is a stupid argument. I am not sure if you know when WWII started, but it was not on December 7th 1941. The Dutch were invaded in May 1940 and before that the World closed their eyes for invasions by the Germans in Eastern Europe.
I am grateful for the help we received from the USA. But also sick of it because it is often used in these kind of topics. The USA being in the Netherlands was based on Pearl Harbor. How many times do we have to say thank you for that, and how many times have you said thank you to the Dutch for making the USA possible by fighting against the British. How many times did we as the small country we are (less than 2 times New Jersey) help the USA in Afghanistan, Iraq and with events like Katrina? This is a topic that does not match up with the discussion about Olympic medals.
    Best!
    Harold

  • USAstillrocks

Wow, reading the comments section just proved this dutch coach right. Football is no manlier than soccer or vice-versa. Who cares what is important to what country, the fact is that we are a country with just over 300 million people getting our asses handed to us by a country with just over 15 million. Props to the Netherlands, a country so small, showing the big countries how it is done!

  • USAstillrocks

Wow, dude, your arrogance reaks! People like you make me embarrassed to be an American. The Dutch do a lot of things better compared to our country with 10% the people. You should get out of the USA and see what every other country thinks of your dumbass ignorance! Grow up dude, they did exceptionally well in the Olympics, and PS the Germans have no role in the Netherlands anymore, that ended about 60 years ago but you are not too far behind the times. Also, essentially everyone outside the United States thinks football is for pussies, and honestly it is. Try playing rugby, or running for 90 minutes straight! Soccer athletes are much more athletes than football players who work hard for a few seconds than relax for over 30. And don’t even get me started on how we suck up basketball now too!

  • USAstillrocks

Jingoistic? Seriously, that word doesn’t even fit in this context?! Look up a definition before you use it. Get out of this country and you will realize that we, more often than now, are the douche bags!

  • USAstillrocks

    The
Then why does the USA suck at Rugby still? And how is it that foreign Rugby players not qualified for their respective countries make it on the NFL in the United States. Pussies much?

  • USAstillrocks

This is the most ignorant post I have read in quite some time. He acts like we were the ones who won the second World War, when we invested hardly anything in it compared to the people of Europe (Most of our fight was on the pacific, but this guy probably doesn’t know where that is). The Netherlands are despised by Europe, if they despise any country it is America, and our political and foreign ignorance. Why am I talking with this guy?…..

  • Ice Road Trucker

So what winter sports are teh Dutch good at.
100% of their medals were in speed skating.
Why do they waste their talent and have no skiers?
    No medallist Bob Sled
    Ski Jumping
    Maybe Curling??
Why not any figure skaters, since they do well on ice?
The Dutch are a one horse show.

  • Anonymous

that coach is a complete idiot. wow that was embarrassing! it makes you wonder if he is little defensive about something like….humm….doping?

  • Anonymous

are you counting the summer olympics? look it up bud! and by the way 23 medals in one event divided into 20 versions is nothing to brag about. Maybe we should give out medals for brushing your hair. long hair, short hair, blonde hair, brown, black, curly, straight, in a pony tail, down, to the side, men’s , women’s etc.. lol

  • Anonymous

The US also kicks but in the summer Olympics. Add the two events, my friend

  • Frank Baine

“Dude”?? Are you 15?. While I appreciate your patriotism, my comments are based on 25 years of living in europe and around europeans to include in the german/dutch border area. I grew up around Brits and other internationals and my high school and later sports were rugby, soccer and cricket, not football, basketball and baseball..don’t watch them, have no interest in them. I grant you couldn’t know that, nevertheless, your assumptions are false. While not arrogant, I am very confident in my brief analysis, so unless you can match that, douche, bugger off. and go skateboard somewhere. Wear your helmet.

  • Harold van Beek

Look at the Olympics and add all the European countries together. USA also kicks butt in Baseball. Which country was the World Champion in 2011? Hint, USA with their professionals were 4th. NHL is the best league in the world. USA 4th in Sochi. Yes, I agree, sports is of a very high level in the USA. A lot of money is invested in sports. But you can’t just expect gold medals if you don’t put the work in it like with skating. Too bad for one of the best skaters of all time Shani Davis!

  • Thor Odinsen

This idiot forgot the USA has nearly 3000 Olympic medals. 800 more than Russia/USSR and blasts away all others. Plus add in the fact that Someone PAYs millions to an NFL player, How much does a professional speed skater make?

  • Therese Rosier

I saw a rediculous TV anchour of an US TV channel ridicouling the Netherlands (Holland) as a country and talking about Mr.Adema as “enema”; Which station is this? I want to send this to my family in the US. Shame on the Americans. They do not know much about the rest of the world but pretend to have the best country in the world: Yeh: 10% of prisoners are now Veterans. To much war!! US destroyed the world economy with the wars and also the lives of many of its people. And now they lost their superpower position in the world also. Russia is taking over, also the sports! Whereever the Americans are trouble rises afterwards: look at the Middle East policies of the USA. Only the Second World War THEN the USA did good rescuing Europe. But now they should stop the wars and solve the problems in their own country. The USA is NOT the best country of the world. More prisoners than in many other countries. Not much social help for all those poor Vets, not much medical help unless you can pay, many homeless in the streets, education is poor, at least education in other languages is, Go to Northern Europe and anybody will be able to speak to you in English. You do not see psychiatric patients in the streets in Holland. They are taken care off. In the US you see psychiatric patients in busstations, railway stations etc…not in Holland. Be nice and ignorant and feel great that you have THE BEST COUNTRY. To bad for you that the rest of the world is laughing at you. They have had more education and know better. Something else: If you want to be up to date about World Politics: Watch BBC or Aljazeera, but if you watch the US TV Channels you do not get any wizer, your TV channels don’t tell you the truth. THey call that a democracy? You are being denied knowledge. The US wants you to stay dumb. Watch other countries TV channels and you will get wizer.

That has to do with money and location. But obviously you have no clue what you are talking about. You should try to go on a winter-sport-trip to the Dutch Alps sometime! By the way, the Dutch won the snowboarding gold 4 years ago and participate in more events but the Dutch know that it is difficult to beat people who grow up in the snow.

That was exactly his point. Do not expect to reap gold Olympic medals if you do not invest in that sport. You pay your NFL players millions so most of them can get into trouble with the law and bail themselves out. Then when they retire they have all sorts of brain injuries, start suing and the lawyers will get the money in the long run. Smart game!

Harold – you act as though going to the Alps or an olympic training village is some 3 day trek, or that the dutch are somehow penniless paupers.
I know of may dutch that truly enjoy skiing. The idea that there is nobody in the country good enough to medal in one of the 15+ events involving boards on feet has nothing to do with the Netherlands being flat.
If you want to talk about 4 years ago – the US had no trouble beating the dutch in skating just that by Shanni davis’4th olympics – he isn’t on top anymore. Your coach is a bloviating fool.

Football players wear pads and helmets because the politicians at one point were going to ban American football because too many players were getting paralyzed or suffering fatal injuries. They had to use pads or the sport was going to be made illegal. Comparing the collisions in rugby to football is absurd as no sport in the world comes close to the brutality of an NFL level collision. Obviously we would have a great rugby team if we gave a shit about rugby. In fairness American soccer players are much better than the credit they are given but you have to remember American soccer is our fifth major sport at best. Just look at actual world cup results. We almost beat Germany but Kahn had an amazing game in goal. Also another side note you might have noticed we control the global economics. How many dutch companies can you name? Now how many American companies are global? Stop being racist jerks and give respect where it is due! The speed skating coach made ignorant remarks.

As of late the USA team has been mediocre at best but if you looked at the last few world cups the US has really been quite impressive. Remember Germany’s Oliver Kahn getting blasted with shots from the Americans? I certainly do. The US should have won that game and played much better. In South Africa we got robbed by corrupt officials. Our last three world cups we have done awesome. Better than England and many other respected nations. Just look at the stats they prove it! Everyone says our soccer is no good but a lot of that has to do with the fact people are simply jealous of America. I bet you would all take a visa to come here though if you could! Pretty good soccer players considering nobody gives a shit about a game where people kick a ball around. American football is chess with gladiators, but maybe chess is too difficult for the european pea sized brains in here.
