The CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats Engaged In A Strange, Strange Fan-Trolling Campaign

Prince William and Kate Middleton recently toured Canada, a trip that occasionally brought the royal couple into the sporting realm, if not with the greatest results. But if you were to believe a spot filmed by the official video channel of the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, William and Kate chose to add some football from this side of the Atlantic to their agenda, and take in a July 16 game between the Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders.

And really, who wouldn’t believe a spot in which William “explains” the decision to attend a football game with curiously vague language that never mentions football and seems like it could apply to a decision about just about anything? Who wouldn’t believe a spot in which Tiger-Cats fans talk about William’s “decision” to attend the game, and rail against his apparent other decision to root for the visiting Riders, at times sounding decidedly rehearsed? Who wouldn’t believe a spot showing William wearing a watermelon shell on his head (as Riders fans are wont to do) that we’re thinking maybe might have been photoshopped?

Well, according to this Reddit user, a local news outlet actually did believe it, and covered the story like the real deal. Not being located in the Hamilton, Ontario area, we were unable to see this supposed report for ourselves, but we certainly hope it went down as described. How far could the Tiger-Cats take this truly bizarre piece of viral marketing? They wouldn’t, say, bring in two vaguely well-to-do-looking people to the stadium for the game holding trollface masks in front of their faces and then capture it on video and set it to the Trololo music, would they? Check the 45-second mark below to find out:

Too bad William and Kate didn’t actually attend the game – the Tiger-Cats rolled to a 33-3 win. Would have taught those silly royals to root for the visiting team.
