Kobayashi: The Real Winner Of The 2011 Hot Dog Eating Contest?

Joey Chestnut ate 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes today. Takeru Kobayashi, competing seven miles away on the roof of a Manhattan bar, might have eaten 69.

That number, which comes from a Wall Street Journal live blog of Kobayashi’s participation in a contest he was banned from, would break a previous world record.

Kobayashi, who is in a contract dispute with the organizers of the Nathan’s contest, was banned from the Coney Island stage for the second year in a row. But that didn’t stop him from competing, via satellite TV, on the rooftop of Manhattan bar 230 Fifth.

Kobayashi competed with the same rules and time limit as the guys in Coney, albeit under different conditions and without the presence of Nathan’s official scorekeepers. It’s doubtful that Kobayashi’s world record will be acknowledged by Major League Eating (yes, that’s a real thing), and ESPN made no mention of Kobayashi’s breaking of the world record. Even in the crowd at 230 Fifth, there were some that were skeptical of the “69″ tally.

After his win at the Coney contest, Chestnut said he was disappointed that Kobayashi couldn’t compete this year, because he’s “good for the sport.” According to WSJ, Kobayashi gained 18.8 pounds during the 10 minute contest.

Here are the last 90 seconds of the official contest in Coney, via ESPN.

    Thats bogus….
He just “happened” to eat 69? lol
    not 70, 71?

and besides, conditions were NOT the same….
85+ at least, in Coney Island with thousands of screaming people in front of him

    Sorry, Loser-Kobayashi…..
    you suck…..just go away Dude….

The irony of your post, Smits95….
    You too, Fruitloop

  • Tommy Whom

Kobayashi is the man. He changed the game. There would be no Chestnut without Kobi.

  • Yousuck

Don’t be an idiot. Koby is a legit eater, but doesn’t want to sign the restrictive contract they force you to sign to compete. It’s rediculous, they won’t let you eat anywhere else all year.

  • FROGMAN6675

Yes, and now he is a showboat and a loser who has a conceited fat head.
He should just be graceful and retire.
    He is finished

  • FROGMAN6675

    Thats the rules….sorry Dude….
If I play major league baseball, I have to join the players association….
    OMG, thats the rules…imagine that!

  • Hank1980

Kobyashi is the true winner and champ.Joey chestnut will always be in Kobyashi shadow..

First off, there was no proof he ate 69
    Second, it was NOT OFFICIAL
    How am I a troll?
    Guy, you need some meds

  • FROGMAN6675

    CHESTNUT 5 X WINNER
    KOBYASHI 6 X WINNER

until next year when Chestnut ties him

  • Spittintruth

Not exactly the same. It’d be more like if he was an olympic athlete and was told he could not do any endorsements unless the US Olympic Committee had complete control over which ones and got a cut of the money.

Endorsements are how the man makes his money. You think he’s going to survive on the 10 grand that he could be taking home from that contest. There will be another competition that will rise to the top that isn’t run by someone so money hungry and Kobayashi WILL be a star again!

Oh, BTW  here are the details of the dispute: http://calorielab.com/news/2010/07/03/root-of-kobayashi-contract-dispute-tv-commercials/

  • BarryO

Anyone have a link to a video of Kobi downing the 69 dogs?

  • That Don Guy

This reminds me of when the Guinness Book of World Records listed two different people as holding the high jump record – the first person to jump 7 1/2 feet was from the People’s Republic of China, back when it was not part of IAAF, so it wasn’t “official”

  • go KOBAYYYYY

Kobayashi has the right to be under no obligation to have MLE dictate in a contract who he can advertise with. Outside of MLE events/competitions he is allowed to sponsor with anyone.  MLE may be facing some anti-trust lawsuits here.  FOR EXAMPLE:  Look at every sports athlete in the U.S.  Just because KOBE plays in the NBA he cant have multiple sponsors….REALLY?  Kobayashi gave brand recognition to the competition give him his share.  Never even heard of food eating competitions until Kobayashi
