EPIC: Bundesliga Ref Power Plays Ejected Manager Who Won’t Leave
It's not entirely unusual for a manager to be ejected from a game or match in any sport. We've seen it time and time again. What is unusual though was Bundesliga referee Felix Zwayer's epic tactic in enforcing an ejection.
In the 64th minute of Sunday's match between Bayer Leverkeusen and Borussia Dortmund, Leveruksen manager Roger Schmidt became enraged on the sideline in response to an infraction that led to a free kick for Dortmund. He appeared to be arguing about the placement of the free kick, which turned out to lead to the match's only goal and Dortmund's 1-0 win.
Zwayer decided to exercise his power by giving Schmidt the boot, but Schmidt refused to leave the pitch. So in what may be the greatest referee power play of all time, Zwayer rounded up his crew and ran off the pitch himself.
How has no one every done this before?! It's so genius. The match can't carry on without the officiating crew, so Schmidt eventually had to accept defeat and leave if he wanted his team to continue to play.
Sadly, this could never happen in American sports. Referees are held too accountable in situations like that, and leagues value the reputation of their players and coaches too much. I never thought I'd say this but, I'm now starting to wish the NFL were more like German soccer.
I would pay so much money to see Ed Hochuli pull that move on Bill Belichick.
