Former MMA Fighter And Austin Powers Actor Convicted In Horrific Torture Case
Joseph Hyungmin Son, who had a short career in the UFC but is best known for playing Dr. Evil's shoe-throwing henchman Random Task in the first Austin Powers, was convicted of torture Thursday in Santa Ana, California in connection with a 1990 Christmas Eve gang rape of a woman. The details of the crime are pretty horrific.
According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, Son distracted the unidentified woman, who was out at around 12:30am walking her dog, by pretending he was lost and asking for directions. He then dragged her to their car with his co-defendant, Santiago Gaitan, and threw her in the backseat. After pistol whipping her, they drove to Huntington Beach where they "raped her repeatedly, sodomized her and forced her to give them oral sex."
The D.A. also stated that Son also threatened to kill her, penetrated her vagina with a firearm, and counted the bullets in the gun out loud while the victim pleaded for her life.
The men then finally allowed the woman to leave, naked and with her pants tied around her eyes. She managed go to a nearby home where the homeowners called police.
Son has not yet been sentenced, but one has to assume he's going away for awhile. Although the DA couldn't include sexual assault charges because of the statute of limitations, the maximum sentence for torture is 15 years in prison.
