Real Steal Is Real: Fighting Robot League Could Be Just Around The Corner
We're not talking about Battlebots here -- these are 15-foot-tall, 7 ton robots, fighting to the death. And unlike in the Hugh Jackman movie, they shoot missiles at each other as well as pounding away with iron fists. What could be better than that?
Three engineers actually quit their jobs to build the first one, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the beginnings of a MegaBot fighting league. Get out your wallets, you fools!
The prototype was displayed at New York Comic-Con last week.
The team set a goal of $1.8 million, a rather hefty price, but not totally unexpected. "We're not building iRobots," Stroup says.
Rewards for making a contribution range from stickers and t-shirts to a hands-on experience called the "Megabot Gladiator: The Ultimate Experience." Donate $5,000 and you and a friend will fight for fame and glory as a MegaBot's pilot and gunner in the world's first tournament.
By the look of things, the pilot would actually be inside the robot as they fight. Could undercard fights be, perhaps, two bulldozers going at it? Or bulldozer vs. backhoe? This is so decadent, yet somehow so right. We machines who are about to die salute you!
