Tennis Uproar After Nick Kyrgios Tells Stan Wawrinka During Match: ‘Kokkinakis Banged Your Girlfriend’
You may remember Nick Kyrgios from such hits as, tanking a match at Wimbledon because he was mad over an umpire's call. The Australian has always lived on the brink of tennis stardom -- he's never won a major, and his biggest claim to fame is a win over Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2014. The big knock on Kyrgios is that he's a hothead and has a major mouth. And it's hard to argue that after Wednesday.
It was the first round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, and Kyrgios was playing world No. 5 Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland. The two were changing over after the second set when Kyrgios approached Wawrinka and said: "Kokkinakis Banged Your Girlfriend. Sorry top tell you that, mate."
He was referring to fellow player Thanasi Kokkinakis and Warinka's (rumored) girlfriend, Donna Vevic, also a pro tennis player. The remark was picked up by courtside microphones. Guardian UK:
Oblivious to the growing controversy outside the court, Kyrgios went on to trump Wawrinka 6-7 (8-10) 6-3 4-0 with the Swiss superstar retiring due to a back injury in the final set.
Asked afterwards why he made the staggering remark, Kyrgios told a Canadian television station: "He was getting a bit lippy with me.
Kind of in the heat of the moment. I don't know. I just said it."

The ATP has fined Kyrgios for the comment.
And when Wawrinka confronted Kyrgios in the locker room following the match, Kyrgios actually ran away from him.
