WATCH: Could “Bleed For This” Be Raging Bull For This Generation?
If last year's Creed taught us anything it's that the American filmgoer loves boxing movies and comeback stories.
This fall, Miles Teller and Open Road Films hope that history repeats itself in a quest for an Oscar season knockout.
The studio recently released a trailer for Bleed for This an upcoming true story motion picture in which Teller portrays colorful loudmouth boxer Vinny Paz, who last fought in 2004 and retired with a 50-10 record, with 30 of those victories coming by knockout. Raging Bull director Martin Scorcese will serve as a producer on the film.
From the looks of the trailer, the film will focus on Paz's eventful boxing career in the midst of the crazy 80's. In fact, the early parts of the trailer, which feature Paz struggling to make weight prior to his weigh-in for a Light Welterweight title fight with Roger Mayweather, intercut with images of knockout punches and good times, resemble another Martin Scorcese picture, The Wolf of Wall Street, before we get to the violent car crash that broke Paz's neck and nearly ended his career. After 13 months, during which he was told he'd never fight again Paz would return to the ring and triumphantly reclaim his title, defeating Luis Santana in a unanimous decision victory. Paz last fought in 2004, winning a 10 round unanimous decision at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, the same sight of his comeback victory.
For the quick talking Paz, a Rhode Island native who was born Vinny Pazienza before legally changing his name in 2001, Teller has been tabbed to fill in the boxer's shoes...and leopard print underwear. Perhaps best known for his roles in Whiplash and the Divergent series, Teller could earn his first Oscar nomination with a role like this. He was somewhat controversially snubbed for Whiplash and a role like this could finally get him the long awaited call from the Academy.
Stealing the show, if that's even possible, in the trailer is Aaron Eckhart, who looks completely unrecognizable in the role of legendary boxing trainer Kevin Rooney. A key component of Paz's comeback, Rooney was also one of the men who discovered Mike Tyson.. Heck, a movie about him would be equally interesting, but it's still going to be good to see Teller, normally cast in clean-cut heartthrob roles, get gritty for this one.
Besides, who among us hasn't wanted to punch Teller in the face for Fantastic Four?
Bleed for This opens in theaters November 4.
