Breaking Down Bovada’s High-Stakes ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prop Bet & Odds
SPOILERS AHEAD, OBVIOUSLY.
Bovada is king of online betting, and their latest prop bet is a real treat for those who enjoy when gambling and Game of Thrones meet: Who will sit on the Iron Throne at end of Season 7?
There are few things more difficult to bet on than who will be sitting on the Iron Throne at the end of season 7 of GOT. Predicting who''ll be atop the coveted seat upon the finale of the HBO series is a bit easier, at least it feels that way right now. We know that season 8 will be the final chapter of the story, and we also know that there are only so many people capable of ruling the realm as the White Walkers encroach from the North.
However there are many who are currently capable of landing their butts on the throne before all is said and done, and we know that shocking plot twists and unforeseen developments are what this show (and George R.R. Martin) have always done best. In other words, shit could go down before Daenerys and/or Jon Snow make their final plays. Plus, this show isn't known for it's quick pace, particularly when it comes to Miss Targaryan and her dragons.
If she's sailing for even half the amount of time that she spent in Myreen, she won't make it to Westeros until episode 4 of season 8.
So here's a quick breakdown and analysis of the characters with Bovada's shortest and longest odds of sitting on the Iron Throne when season 7 concludes.
Cersei Lannister: 31/100 (-325)
Cersei's odds increased dramatically just in the middle of me writing this post. She's known for her cunning and ruthlessness, but it's her rashness that has landed the Queen Regent back in power. All three of her children are dead, and she can blame only herself for all of it. The only thing she has left is power, and there's no one in this world that will fight harder out of pure vengeance than Cersei.
Plus, with all her children gone, so too are all her true weaknesses.
Daenerys Targaryan: 11/5 (+220)
Again, this is all going on the premise that she makes it to King's Landing and stakes her claim all in the 10-ish hours of season 7. While it's entirely possible that she does, and that season 8 focuses on her joining forces with Jon to fight the walkers, it just feels too expedient for GOT.
Gendry: 4/1 (+400)
It's easy to forget, but Gendry is the bastard son of Robert Baratheon - and under the pretense that the Baratheons are still the rightful heirs to the throne, Gendry could challenge Cersei's claim.
Jon Snow: 10/1 (+1,000)
Jon has been playing the long game for the entire span of the show. Now, having defeated Ramsay Bolton in the Battle of the Bastards to become King of the North, he's as powerful as anyone in the realm. Still, Jon's greatness is also sometimes his downfall - that being that he sees the larger picture in a way that no one else (except for Bran) does. He spends a lot of time trying to convince his brethren that the petty squabbles of men don't compare to the threat of the white walkers.
So while it may be the reason he prevails in the end, it will undoubtedly slow him down.
Tyrion Lannister: 12/1 (+1,200)
Tyrion may be a Lannister, but he's also Team Khaleesi now, and that makes him a very powerful man in many ways. Tyrion has said in the past that he has no interest in ruling, but as many have noted, that's what would make him a good ruler. Perhaps there's a way he finds himself shoving his big sister out of the way after all.
Sansa Stark: 14/1 (+1,400)
Sansa has been through more shit that she neither deserved nor initiated than just about anyone on the show. She's an honorable and brave Stark, but she's also had quite enough of being told what to do - even it's from her older brother. That hardheadedness will of course make her vulnerable at some point. So while it's hard to imagine that her goal right now is to be a queen, she is the kind of character who could find herself there through the machinations of others (cough Littlefinger cough cough).
Petyr Baelish: 15/1 (+1,500)
This one seems like more of a stretch than is plausible in this world, where family names and lineage are so inherent to any respected claim to the throne. Littlefinger is the most conniving, witty and manipulative player in the game, no doubt. But he rules from behind the scenes, pulling the strings as the puppet master of sorts. He could find himself ruling the kingdom, but it will never be by sitting on the Iron Throne.
Jaime Lannister: 20/1 (+2,000)
KING SLAYAAAAAH. As the only person alive that Cersei ostensibly still cares about, Jaime wields untold influence over whatever remains of their hold on the Red Keep. He also has a few friends in high and low places, including Brienne of Tarth (and therefore Podrick), Bronn and Tyrion.
Arya Stark: 30/1 (+3,000)
Arya learned a lot during her time "worshipping" the Many-Faced God, and despite his best efforts, J'aquen Hghar was unable to convince her to abandon her cause. So now she's more lethal than ever. The one chink in her armor is her fondness for her family, and not nearly as many of them are dead as she might believe.
Bran or Benjen Stark: 35/1 (+3,500)
I mean... I won't claim to be able to make heads or tails of what's going on with Bran or Uncle Coldhands, but I will say that it would take a whole lot to happen in a very short amount of time for either one of them to even make it to King's Landing let alone sit upon the Iron Throne.
Having said that... if Bran reunites with Jon this season I'm calling out of work on Monday. YOU HEAR THAT, SPORTSGRID?!
Podrick Payne: 200/1 (+20,000)
Pod has some very long odds, if you catch my drift ;)
Daario Naharis: 200/1 (+20,000)
Missandei: 250/1 (+25,000)
She's not throne-bound but hot damn if she wouldn't look incredible in some royal silks.
Meera Reed: 300/1 (+30,000)
Gilly: 300/1 (+30,000)
DUDE FUCK YES WHY CAN'T QUEEN GILLY BE A THING. Samwell Tarley is gonna have his come up at some point, and I firmly believe that our ride or die girl is going to get hers too.
