7 Takeaways From The Walking Dead’s Season 7 Trailer
(WARNING: The following contains spoilers from previous seasons of The Walking Dead, as well as spoilers from the comic series of the same name. If you don't want to be spoiled, exit now and get caught up. We'll see you when you do so.)
You've waited just under 4 months to find out who was whacked...literally...on The Walking Dead's polarizing Season 6 finale. Now that the official trailer for the upcoming 7th season of the popular series is out, get to....keep waiting.
San Diego Comic-Con gave way to the first footage of the new season, whose October 23 premiere will reveal who was bludgeoned to death by the show's new main antagonist Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his trusty barbed wire bat Lucille. Despite new footage of the show's staples being at a premium so as to hide the identity of the deceased, there's still plenty to discuss in the glimpses we got of the new chapter in the Dead saga. Here are 7 takeaways we got from Friday's footage....
Don't Ask The Obvious
No, we still have no idea who got to know Lucille as footage of Grimes's 11 is mostly kept to flashbacks. Whoever edited the damn thing also does a solid job of giving away no clues, as several characters are show with their back(s) toward the camera, or we get to see our new survivors. We know for sure it's not Rick (Andrew Lincoln) or Carl (Chandler Riggs), For the record, I still think it's Glen, but we'll see. If I can offer one development...Negan appears to be striking multiple times in the trailer...is it possible he gives the Grimes Group a 2-for-1 special?
You're Going to Love To Hate Negan
Frustrating as the season finale was, it finally offered us a vision of Negan, perhaps the show's most anticipated character yet. In his brief scene, Morgan plays Negan with a perfect mix of charm, sadism and insanity, and he'll figure to be the show's first long-term human antagonist since The Governor (David Morrissey). Whereas The Governor was considerably softened for his television closeup (Not that there was anything wrong with that because Morrissey pulled it off), they don't appear to be sugarcoating Negan, who can be seen forcing his own men to the ground (at 1:44) and later cozying up in Alexandria with Olivia (Ann Mahoney) and a glass of lemonade (at 1:55).
Key comic character Dwight (Austin Amelio) made his debut during the 1st half of last season, and later returned to wreck havoc in the latter stages. Dwight's first appearance suggested that he fled the Saviors, but he's later reunited with them, albeit with a new facial scar. We see Dwight in action at several points in the trailer, apparently doing Negan's bidding, though interestingly we also see his wife "Honey" (Christine Evangelista) who appears to be not only none worse for the wear, but speaking with Morgan (Lennie James) who was nowhere near the Saviors' nefarious trap. Could Dwight and Honey be prepping some sort of coup with Dwight serving as a mole/sacrifice?
Shut Up Spence
With a majority of the main cast still on their knees, Alexandria was left in the charge of Spencer Monroe (Austin Nichols) and Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam). While Father Gabriel proved his worth last season, Spencer, the last survivor of Alexandria's First Family, is probably best known for...whatever this was. We get a glimpse of Spencer in the trailer, complaining that the group "should've made a deal with (the Saviors)", showing disgust with Rick's leadership. Spence did the the same thing in the comic, to the point of going to Negan and plotting Rick's demise. Negan kindly responded but relieving us of Spencer's prescience, and he didn't even have the dignity of getting a Lucille death. Are we possibly being set up for a similar exit?
Morgan's New Friends
Morgan escaped last year's baseball festivities when he went out looking for Carol (Melissa McBride), eventually find not only her, but a pair of combat gear clad survivors he and Rick caught a glimpse of earlier in the season, and we see more of these guys in the trailer. They're presumably affiliated with a new character who introduces himself later on, Ezekiel (Khary Payton), who is the leader of The Kingdom, what appears to be a highly advance survivor's community. Even more badass is his pet tiger, who goes unnamed in the trailer but comic fans will know it goes by Shiva. It turns out Jesus (Tom Payne), who can be seen kicking walker ass several times, was right when he told the group that their world was getting bigger.
You OK, Carol?
One of The Walking Dead's most, if not the most, complex characters, Carol went on a bit of a roller coaster arc last season. Of course we got to see the badass, no-nonsense Carol we've grown to love in the later seasons, but all of that badassery...and, subsequent taking of human life...had begun to take its toll on her, leading her to self-exile, nearly meeting her end at the hands of the Saviors before Morgan and combat gear guys intervened. Carol still appears to recovering from her injuries at first glance, but later appears in some sort of theater setting, and in a an almost jovial state. Is she perhaps cracking under the pressure? Or has the most badass cookie baker on television finally found peace?
Chambler the Champ
Introduced in the 4th season, Tara Chambler (Alanna Masterson) has had her share of subplots, but she was mostly relegated to spectator duty last season as Masterson was pregnant. She disappeared completely in the latter stages of the season, headed off on a supply run with Heath (Corey Hawkins). The final seconds of the trailer, which usually offer surprises (Merle's return and the first hints of Terminus previously showed up in the Comic-Con trailers), shows Tara fighting threats, both in flesh and corpse. Let's keep in mind also, that Tara is unaware that her girlfriend Denise (Merritt Weaver) is no longer with us courtesy of Dwight so this could shape up to be a interesting season for the ex-disciple of The Governor.
